Litres, pints and gallons

Most of us know that a can of soft drink is 330 ml and a large bottle of milk holds 4 pints, but how do we change between these two quantities?

An understanding of this conversion is very valuable in everyday life, as in the UK we tend to use both imperial and metric measurements when we are talking about capacity.

You are expected to know that 1 litre is roughly 1.75 pints. You should also be aware that there are 8 pints in a gallon, which is equal to about 4.5 litres.

Question

Jim is selling drinks at a local charity fundraiser. He has brought with him 10 litres of lemonade and plans to serve them in half-pint glasses. Roughly how many lemonade drinks can he sell?

Show answer

Firstly, convert litres into pints:

10 × 1.75 = 17.5.

One pint makes two glasses, so multiply by two:

17.5 × 2 = 35.

Jim can sell 35 lemonade drinks.

Question

Fiona is shopping for a new car and finds one that can go 54 miles per gallon of petrol. If a litre of petrol costs £1.20, how much would it cost her per mile?

Show answer

1 gallon = 4.5 litres.

54 miles can be travelled on 4.5 litres of fuel.

54 ÷ 4.5 = 12.

She can travel 12 miles per litre of fuel.

12 miles costs £1.20.

So 1 mile costs £1.20 ÷ 10 = 10p.
