Loki Release Date Changes To Weekly Wednesday Episode Drops

Marvel's third upcoming Disney+ original series Loki has changed its release date and will now have its episodes premiere on Wednesdays. After Tom Hiddleston's God of Mischief fell by Thanos' hand at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War, many were stunned that it could be the end of the road for the beloved character. Luckily, that wasn't the case. When the titular superhero team goes back in time in Avengers: Endgame, they run into Loki during the Battle of New York. Naturally, when the opportunity is presented to escape, Loki steals the Tesseract and disappears.

This is where Loki will pick up with Hiddleston's character, as he is recruited by the Time Variance Authority to help fix the Sacred Timeline. If he fails to help, Loki faces "deletion from reality," the last thing he wants. In addition to Hiddleston, Loki includes stars Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Richard E. Grant, and Sophia Di Martino. The series was originally set to premiere Friday, June 11, but Marvel has pulled a fast one on fans and is switching things up.

In a new video on the official Loki Twitter, Hiddleston announces that his first solo series will be getting a release date change. First, the actor laments on the fact that his character is usually left out of the spotlight when it comes to superhero montages, but this time, things will be a little bit different. Proclaiming that "Wednesdays are the new Fridays," Hiddleston reveals that Loki will now premiere on June 9, two days before its original release date. Following that, the show will debut its brand new episodes every Wednesday.

There could be a few reasons behind Loki's change of plans. The most obvious is Black Widow. With the Scarlett Johansson led film being pushed back from its May release date and now debuting on July 9, Black Widow will premiere on the day Loki's penultimate episode would have originally hit Disney+. Making matters more complicated is Marvel's decision to release the film through their Premier Access platform on the streamer. The studio clearly wants to give Black Widow enough breathing room as it is their big return to the theatrical sphere.

With Falcon and the Winter Soldier being Disney+'s most watched premiere yet, the streamer likely wants to avoid stifling their numbers that day by forcing the fanbase to choose between one or the other. Loki is tracking to be Marvel's biggest original series debut yet and, if the numbers are right, it seems that the MCU will consistently outdo itself with each and every new series. Seeing as Hiddleston's God of Mischief is one of the most beloved characters in the MCU, it's safe to say Loki is primed to be the streamer's summer smash.
