My previous Basset died at age 16. Is that unusual or about normal? Just wondering what you guys have experienced as far as life span. I don't like the things I've read about Basset life expectancy. Hoping it's wrong....it was in the case of my first Basset. Just hoping that my boys will live forever....Monte is 11 and Oliver is 7. #1 · Jul 4, 2012 My previous Basset died at age 16. Not even close to being reasonable i think studies are nmore in the 7-9 year range but they are not reliable either because the use dog hospital records that are skewd by acute trrauma early in life ie car accidents. 12-13 even factoring out and acute injury and puppy diseases i very optomistic for mean age 10-11 is a more realisitic figure. Basset hound longeviety the two british studies put it at 11-12 IMHO those studies that rely on owner feeedback tend to overestimae longeviety because owners self selelect out the dog that are on the low end of the bell curve because that was a special rare circumstance but leave in the fliers on the high end, where in ones that rely on animal hospitals just the opposite happens. #4 · Jul 4, 2012 12-13 seems to be the norm for my guys. 12 is just not long enough! :eek:

I have Macaws that will live to be 75 or so. Wouldn't it be awesome if our beloved hounds could live that long? Was hoping everybody would say 16 was a common age (like my 1st Basset). Hoping that Monte would have at least 5 more years-maybe he will defy the odds too. 0 Reply #5 · Jul 5, 2012 We adopted Gus three months ago, and he's estimated to be eight or nine years old. Fortunately, at his last check-up, the vet said he's in robust health. This is despite a severe case of heart-worm before we adopted him. 0 Reply #8 · Jul 6, 2012 I don't want to jinx things, but Lightning is 14 and 1/4 years old, and he's doing very well. I can tell that despite the various meds he's on, his back and/or hips hurt him, but he still runs around like a nut. He's got lupus, his eyesight is bad and his hearing is either selective or bad, I can't decide which, but otherwise he's healthy as a horse. Stomps would have lived much longer if he hadn't hurt his back and had to be put to sleep.

We never knew his exact age, but I would guess he was about 13. So don't count your kids out when they hit 12. #9 · Jul 7, 2012

Haha :] The beauty of owning a Basset! There is almost no line between selective hearing and loss of hearing. They're a sneaky lot, they are. :cool:

that loves his weekly trip to the petsmart. He walks around and is loved on by everyone, gets weighed and maybe a nail cliping, and some treats. then he walks to the car, gets into his crate and is lifted into the car for his ride home. P.S.-- The manager told Mr. Fred's human that they could "walk" in his aircondentioned store whenever he wanted to do so. :rolleyes:

She has a great aspect on life - always the optimist. You can open any cupboards, doors, shopping bags etc..and she's there. OH thinks she's looking for that sirloin steak that just might possibly be jump out. As long as she thinks she's the Queen and we are her loyal subjects she's very happy.And we are all happy to oblige. Once a week the girls go to doggy day care and Lula spends the day playing with the pups, comes home exhausted. OH and I are always saying take a page out of the Lula book

#16 · Aug 18, 2012 Daphneyland has (obviously) a huge range of bassets. Oldest is 19, few 18's. They can get up there. I think they're like people in that it really can vary. They came from the same breeder, same mom. I suspect she is puppy milling and not giving the females proper rest between gestation times. Be choosy where you get your Basset from.
