Neck Bands & Platysmal Bands FAQ

What are platysmal bands?

Platysmal bands are vertical lines or cords that can appear in the neck when the platysma muscle becomes more visible. This commonly occurs as the skin naturally loses elasticity and support over time. These bands are a normal structural change and do not usually indicate a medical problem.

What causes vertical neck bands to appear? Can neck bands be treated without surgery?

Some patients may explore non-surgical treatments that aim to soften muscle activity, support collagen production or improve skin quality. These treatments may include prescription muscle-relaxing treatments, radiofrequency microneedling, laser skin rejuvenation and ultrasound skin tightening. Suitability and outcomes vary between individuals and require assessment by a qualified healthcare professiona

Do muscle-softening treatments work for neck bands?

Prescription muscle softening  treatments may reduce the appearance of neck bands by limiting muscle contraction in selected patients. The treatment is temporary, and maintenance treatments may be required if ongoing improvement is desired. Individual responses vary and results cannot be guaranteed.

How long do non-surgical neck treatments last?

Treatment duration varies depending on the type of procedure, individual skin characteristics and lifestyle factors. Some treatments may require a series of sessions, and maintenance treatments may be recommended to support results over time. Your treating practitioner can discuss expected treatment timelines during consultation.

Is radiofrequency microneedling effective for neck skin tightening?

Radiofrequency microneedling treatments aim to stimulate collagen production and support skin texture and firmness. While some patients notice improvement in skin quality, treatment outcomes vary and multiple sessions may be recommended.

What is the best treatment for neck ageing?

There is no single treatment suitable for all patients. The most appropriate option depends on individual anatomy, skin quality, muscle activity and treatment goals. A personalised consultation allows healthcare professionals to recommend suitable treatment pathways based on clinical assessment.

Can platysmal bands be removed?

Platysmal bands cannot always be completely removed, but both surgical and non-surgical treatments may reduce their appearance in selected patients.

Are neck bands a normal part of ageing?

Yes. Neck bands are a common structural change that may occur as skin elasticity and muscle tone change over time.
