Lovecraft Country Made A Heartbreaking Reference To Emmett Till

Lovecraft Country viewers were left shocked and touched by the show’s apparent reference to Emmett Till in episode 3.

The horror series – produced by Misha Green, Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams – has been receiving praise for the way it juxtaposes real-life racist threats with mystical creatures.

The third episode, titled Holy Ghost, made a subtle reference to Emmett, a 14–year-old black Boy from Chicago who was murdered by white men in Mississippi in 1955 for ‘flirting’ with a white woman.

The woman in question has since confessed that the claims were false and Emmett’s brutal murder has been a key example of the way innocent black lives have been ended by racists in the States.

In the episode, young black children are playing with a Ouija board and one boy is seen wearing a white shirt and black-and-white striped tie.

The outfit was the same thing Emmett wore in a widely circulated photo shared before his murder.

And the child was also referenced to as Bobo, which was Emmett’s nickname.

Then when Bobo asked the board, ‘Am I going to have a good time on my trip?’

The board responded ‘No’, which fans think was a possible reference to the fact that Emmett was murdered while visiting his relatives in Mississippi.

The powerful series follows young Black Korean War vet Atticus Freeman, his Uncle George, and his friend Letitia Lewis (Jurnee Smollett) as they travel across 1950s Jim Crow America.

Lovecraft Country airs on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic in the UK.
