LSAT testing and results timelines

LSAC® offers the LSAT exam multiples times per year. LSAT dates are spread out over eight months, giving future law students multiple chances to take the exam. You can take the LSAT remotely (with a live online proctor) or in person at a Prometric test center. The registration deadline for each LSAT test date is usually six weeks before test day. If you’re planning to take the in-person LSAT, it’s smart to register early—spots at test centers can fill up fast.

That six-week countdown is also your last window to lock in your LSAT prep plan, fine-tune your study schedule, and make sure you’re ready to crush it. After test day, your LSAT score is released about three weeks later.

When should you take the LSAT?

Great question. The short answer: Take the LSAT when you’re prepped and ready!

The longer answer: Many students take it in their junior or senior year so they can apply to law school after graduation. (If you take it earlier, remember that LSAT scores are valid for just five years.)

If you plan to apply to law school the same year you take the LSAT, consider an LSAT test date earlier in the year to get a jump on the application process.

How often is the LSAT offered?

The LSAT is offered about eight times a year. The LSAT testing year generally runs from August through June. There will usually be between two and four LSAT test dates every administration.

When can I take the LSAT in 2025?

The 2025 LSAT dates are currently: January 2025, February 2025, April 2025, June 2025, August 2025, September 2025, October 2025, and November 2025.

When can I take the LSAT in 2026?

LSAT dates planned for 2026 are: January, February, April, and June.

How do you register for the LSAT?

You can register for an LSAT test date on the Law School Admissions Council’s (LSAC) website before the LSAT date’s application deadline. To register, you’ll need to create an LSAC account, choose your preferred test center, and pay the registration fee. The LSAT registration fee for the 2025–2026 season is $238.

Can you change your LSAT date or LSAT Test Center?

Yes! Things happen and sometimes you need to reschedule your LSAT date or take it at a different test center. Rescheduling your LSAT test date or changing your test center is free until the registration deadline and costs $145 up to seven days after the registration deadline. Visit LSAC’s website for more information on test date changes.

When should I take the LSAT? How do I choose an LSAT date?

Short answer: Take the LSAT when you’re ready! But “ready” can be subjective. We advise students to sign up for an LSAT date that will give them enough time to prep without feeling like they’re taking on too much or ignoring other responsibilities.

You can take the LSAT as early as your freshman year of college, but LSAT test scores are only valid for five years. If you plan to apply to law school after college, you might want to wait until your junior or senior year.

You need to also think about when law school applications are due. Most law schools begin accepting applicants as early as September, and it’s better to apply earlier in the cycle if you can!

You will need a reportable LSAT score when you apply. So if you plan to apply to law school the same year you take the LSAT, choose an LSAT test date earlier in the year and make sure you have enough time built in to study with LSAT prep courses.

What is the hardest month to take the LSAT?

There is no such thing as an easier or harder LSAT test date—objectively speaking. A particularly tough LSAT will likely result in lower raw scores across the board. This means you can miss more questions and still get the same scaled score as an “easier” test with higher average raw scores.

Unfortunately, this is not something anyone can predict before your LSAT date.

How many times can I take the LSAT?

It’s not uncommon to retake the LSAT more than once to earn a competitive score. Just remember there are rules for how many times you can take the LSAT:

  • Five times within the current reportable score period (i.e., since June 2017)
  • A total of seven times over a lifetime
How do I prepare for the LSAT?

Some people can wake up one morning and decide to take the LSAT with no prep (if they registered for an LSAT test date, of course). But most of us actually need to study at least a little — and LSAT prep is not one-size-fits-all!

The method that works for you will likely depend on your schedule, goals, learning preference, and location. There are a few common ways LSAT courses are offered:

  • Online courses are self-paced and usually consist of on-demand video lessons, ideal for busy students or those who would just rather prep for the LSAT at their own pace.
  • Live courses: These courses are made up of classes taught by instructors and livestreamed at set times a few days per week. You get the interaction of an in-person course with the convenience of a virtual learning experience.
How long should I prep for the LSAT?

You’ll want to devote between two and four months to LSAT prep. Blueprint's Live Course and 170+ Course run between two and eight months, but you can also subscribe to our Self-Paced Course before and after the class ends if you want more study time.

People retaking the LSAT might be able to get away with less prep time, as long as they understand what their strengths and weaknesses are — working with a private tutor is great for that!

Where do I start?

If you’re sure you want to take the LSAT, this is a great place to start! First, choose an LSAT test date and decide when you want to take the LSAT based on your schedule and when you plan on applying to law school. Then, check the LSAC site to see if registration is open for the test you’ve picked.

Once you’ve registered, it’s time to start studying. Not sure which LSAT prep option is right for you? Talk to our Student Success team.

You can also sign up for your free LSAT practice bundle to take a free practice exam, preview your study plan, and try out our self-paced course by creating a free account today.
