Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Lucian
The name Lucian comes from an Old Roman family name Lucianus which it turn comes from Lucius, an ancient personal name derived from the Latin word “lux” meaning “light” or “to shine”. The name Lucius predates Christ by several centuries and was held by a couple of early Etruscan kings of ancient Rome as well as several other prominent Romans of Antiquity. Lucius was also borne by three Popes and several early saints. The name is mentioned briefly in the New Testament in reference to Lucius of Cyrene who established the Christian Church in Antioch. Despite the name’s Christian connections, it never became a heavily used or wide-spread name in medieval Europe. It wasn’t until the Renaissance (14th to 17th centuries) that Lucius got noticed. The spelling of Lucian (pronounced LOO-shən) is used among Romanians and English-speakers. The French spell it Lucien and the Spanish, Portuguese and Italians use Luciano and Lucio. Luca is occasionally used as a pet form. All About the Baby Name – Lucian
Personality
OF THE BOY NAME LUCIAN
Romance is the hallmark of the Six personality. They exude nurturing, loving, and caring energy. Sixes are in love with the idea of love in its idealized form - and with their magnetic personalities, they easily draw people toward them. Like the number Two personality, they seek balance and harmony in their life and the world at large. They are conscientious and service-oriented, and a champion for the underdog. These personalities naturally attract money and are usually surrounded by lovely material objects - but their human relationships are always primary. They thrive in giving back to others rather than being motivated by their own desires. This is when they achieve great things. Sixes are natural teachers, ministers and counselors.
Popularity
OF THE BOY NAME LUCIAN
This Old World ancient charmer has been “shining” upon the masculine naming charts in American since the government first began tracking naming trends back in 1880. At the turn of the 20th century, Lucian was used in moderation and most likely by immigrants considering Lucian has a very Euro-cool ethnic sensibility compared to most English names. Unfortunately, Lucian lost his “cool” factor as the name slowly went out of style as the 20th century progressed. By the 1940s, Lucian could barely hold onto even a low position on the charts. The name finally dimmed his “light” in 1953 when he fell off the naming charts and into the darkness. He would remain in hiding for over 50 consecutive years, finally returning to the charts this new century in 2005. Lucian didn’t exactly come back with a bang, but at least he’s back on the radar. Lucian is a cool name and its pronunciation even gives it more of a cosmopolitan flavor. It has ancient intelligence thanks to the 2nd century satirical writer Lucian of Samosata who is also considered one of the first Western novelists. This name is so far from being overused that it’s a nice choice for parents looking for a little more originality (also a great alternative to the ever-popular and perhaps too trendy Luke or Lucas). If you want a little more Italian flair, then you may want to consider Luciano (as in Pavarotti).Quick Facts
