I like Luka. He's really nice, but do you think he's just like Adrien? Just a friend?

Luka Couffaine is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Kagami Tsurugi) of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. He is the older twin brother of Juleka Couffaine and the guitarist of Kitty Section who attracts the attention of Marinette Dupain-Cheng.[10][11][12]

In "Silencer", when Bob Roth threatened Marinette after she accused him of stealing Kitty Section's design for XY's new song, Luka was akumatized by Hawk Moth into Silencer, a voice-stealing supervillain.

In "Desperada", after Adrien Agreste gave up being Aspik for not being able to help Ladybug against the titular akumatized supervillain for the 25,913th time, she decided to give Luka the Snake Miraculous. When the Miraculous is inhabited by Sass, he becomes Viperion, a snake-themed superhero with the power of Intuition who helps Ladybug and Cat Noir during "particularly difficult missions" in the third season and beyond.

In "Truth", when Marinette couldn't tell him why she disappeared all the time, Luka was akumatized and amokized by Shadow Moth into Truth, a three-eyed supervillain that forced people to tell the truth. His sentimonster was Lighteye, a giant floating eye that could shine a spotlight that prevented people from being able to move.

In "Wishmaker", during the fight against the titular villain, Luka, as Viperion, discovered the true identities of both Ladybug and Cat Noir, who were exposed after being affected by the titular akumatized supervillain's powers. Because of his power to go back in time, this didn't happen in the main timeline, leaving everyone, including the two main heroes unaware that Luka knows who they are, but Luka didn't tell them of his knowledge as to not give them something else to worry about.

After the events of "Strikeback", Luka was temporarily unable to become Viperion after Monarch managed to steal the Snake Miraculous along with all the others contained in the Chinese Miracle Box from Ladybug's yo-yo.

In "Migration", after Bob Roth tricked Kitty Section to sign a contract only for him to fire everyone except for Luka so he can get rich with his talent and take ownership of the band's name, songs, and everything they've created and will create, Luka was almost reakumatized by Monarch into Silencer. However, Luka was able to reject the megakuma, but not before Monarch sensed his vehement resistance and correctly deduced the reason why: he knows Ladybug and Cat Noir's true identities. After Bob Roth was deakumatized, Luka told everyone that he needed to temporarily leave Paris for knowing Ladybug and Cat Noir's true identities, going away with Jagged, Penny, and Fang until Monarch is defeated.

Between "Migration" and "Re-creation", Luka, along with Jagged and Penny, joined the Order of the Guardians and trained with Su-Han in Rio de Janeiro.

In "Re-creation", after having joined up with Su-Han and the Order of the Guardians, Luka returned temporarily to Paris to help out in the fight against Monarch. After Marinette recovered the stolen Miraculous and reforged them following Monarch's defeat, Luka was given back the Snake Miraculous permanently and reunited with Sass.

In "Revelator", it's shown that, after getting his Miraculous back, Luka, along with the other secondary heroes of Ladybug's team, was trained to unlock his adult powers, no longer detransforming after using his power.

In "El Toro De Piedra", it is revealed that Luka is currently in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In "Mister Agreste", Ladybug, using the Snake Miraculous, reveals to Luka that she lied to the world that Gabriel Agreste was a hero and that he was actually Monarch. Surprised and desperate, he asks to borrow Ladybug's Miraculous, saying he knows things she doesn't and that he's the only one who can solve the situation, but doesn't tell her what he would do. However, she uses Second Chance to erase this event.

Appearance

Physical Appearance

Luka is a tall and slender teenage boy. He has a Roman nose, pale pink lips, luminous cyan colored eyes, and medium-length black hair that has dyed cyan tips. He has full bangs in front of his bangs, the tips slightly flared out. He also has thick curved forelocks framing his face.

From Season 6 onwards, his hair is slightly more messier and spiky. He has more visible thick clumps of hair atop his head.

In Seasons 2-5, his attire included a white t-shirt with a black Jagged Stone imprint and ripped-like patterns at the bottom and black jeans ripped at the knee. On his right wrist, he also wore a brown leather bracelet, and yellow and orange wristbands, and his fingernails were painted black. He had a grayish cerulean denim jacket with a strong blue elbow-length sleeved hooded cardigan underneath, as well as black high-top converse sneakers with different colored patterns. He wore a black ring with silver outlining on his left index finger and circular black earrings in his ears. Up until "Re-creation", on occasion, he wore the Snake Miraculous as a silver band with ridges.

From Season 6 onwards, his attire has slight changes. He keeps only his hoodie now, with the hood black as well as the drawstrings. His shirt loses the Jagged Stone imprint and ripped designs, accessorized with a charcoal gray belt that has a silver buckle. His pants retain the rips, but said rips are now on the top of the right leg than in the middle of both legs, as well as the pant legs rolled up to the ankle. His sneakers are replaced by dark brown boots with darker soles and laces, and on his left wrist is a white bracelet and a cyan green bracelet which is possibly the Snake Miraculous, the others retained.

As Viperion

In Seasons 3-5, Viperion gained a shiny deep green muscular-looking bodysuit. He had dark turquoise lower arms, upper front torso, shoulders, sides of the abdomen, and lower legs with a snake-like texture and dark sea blue trimming. The top of the swan-neck, hands, middle of the stomach down to the sides of the thighs, and feet were vivid cyan, the stomach having spiky lines down the middle to resemble the underbelly of a snake with matching dark sea blue trimming on the aforementioned body parts. The soles and two lines around the feet were also dark sea blue, while on the chest was a bright lime diamond with a scale pattern and dark green bordering. His mask was dark turquoise with a scale pattern at the top, vivid cyan with dark blue vertical lines at the bottom, deep green angular spots around his eyes, and dark green nostril-like designs, complete with bright lime fangs at the bottom. His eyes were brilliant spring green, and the dyed ends of his hair changed to a moderate sea green. His Miraculous was a bangle and turned vivid cyan with a snake face on top and a light lime tongue and eyes, worn on his left wrist. He wielded his lyre as his weapon.

From Season 6 onwards, Viperion's appearance changes significantly. His costume turns dark blue with grayish green shoulders and neck, the chest having square-like segments around the top. The neck had a rounded swan-neck at the bottom with a dark blue turtleneck part on top lining the bottom of Viperion's chin with fang-like parts above, emulating the lower jaw of a snake. He also gains a hexagonal scaly sea green pattern on his front torso and inner arms, the pattern coiling around the torso to the right thigh, resembling a snake's body. The diamond on his chest turns gold with deep green triangular pieces jutting at either side of the bordering, as well as a slit in the middle of the diamond resembling a snake's eye. His eyes seem to turn gold with mint green sclera, as well as his mask turning grayish green and simpler, but it retains similar fang-like details and has an angular shape. His Miraculous also turns into a teal downward V-shaped bracelet, now worn on the right wrist. He also gains grayish green parts at the sides of his lower legs down to the middle of the toe, and vivid cyan soles with triangular pieces on top connecting to the sides of said toe. His hair also gains light cyan dyed ends.

As Silencer

Luka as Silencer.

He had brilliant cobalt blue skin and vivid emerald green eyes, retaining his civilian hair beneath his helmet. His helmet was black with a spiked brilliant purple part at the top lined in moderate heliotrope, with a black curved cylindrical part on top, metallic moderate heliotrope circular parts at the sides with fuchsia insides, and the bottom of the helmet looked like a jagged mouth with a fuchsia inside and moderate heliotrope lining at the bottom. His bodysuit was black with a brilliant purple front up to the sides of the upper chest, accented by brilliant heliotrope trimming, matching-colored angular details on the top of his lower limbs and around the foot with a horizontal mark on top, and a black jagged mouth-like design on the torso with brilliant purple sides and light heliotrope accents on the top and bottom, and a black inside with a horizontal pattern of diamonds with a brilliant purple and light heliotrope gradient resembling sound volume.

As Truth

Luka as Truth.

He wore a sapphire bluish-black full-bodysuit with a hidden wedge on his feet which covered all of his body with dark grayish cornflower blue accents on the chest, shoulders, and around the round eye symbol on both of his knees, wrists, and top of his shoulders, the accents having triangular points jutting out, the chest details connecting to the sides of the abdomen's accents, as the chest design is an upside-down triangle. His boots and bracelets were dark grayish cornflower blue. He had three pupil-less eyes and they were cornflower bluish-white, the main ones having triangular parts at the sides and his third eye was on his forehead with three various points, two of which go diagonally and one going horizontally in the middle at the top (similar to Mylène Haprèle's form as Horrificator) and carried an eye necklace on his chest that accented the eye designs but in a triangular shape, the akumatized version of the guitar pick Marinette Dupain-Cheng gave him that he made into a necklace.

Personality

Luka explains to Marinette that he tends to make more sense with his guitar.

Luka explains to Marinette that he tends to make more sense with his guitar.

Luka is a friendly, polite, playful, charming, and flirtatious boy who is very mature and wise for his age. Like his twin sister Juleka, he is a music lover and a talented guitarist, rarely seen without his guitar by his side. Although everyone assumes he wants to be a rock star when he grows up, given his love of rock music and that his father is Jagged Stone, he is actually drawn to the art of crafting stringed instruments and wants to dedicate himself to making them so that others can express their emotions through music.[13] True to how Marinette Dupain-Cheng described him in his dedicated webisode, Luka is intuitive and attentive to the people around him, able to read others' emotions and express them through music, as when he cheers Marinette up shortly after meeting her.

Luka supporting his sister's desire to be a model.

Luka supporting his sister's desire to be a model.

He is very caring and generous, especially with his friends and family, but also with people he has just met, easily winning the goodwill of those around him. Thanks to his emotional maturity, Luka can get to the root of people's problems and offer advice to help them, becoming a reliable source of emotional support for his loved ones. He is welcoming, empathetic, and encouraging, urging those he loves to do things they feel insecure about and to be more open with their feelings. Luka is also brave and not easily frightened, willing to put himself in danger to protect others or help stop villains, as shown in "Mayura", where he is inspired by Ladybug and Cat Noir's determination to join the rest of Paris's citizens in the battle against the army of scarlet akumas and show his support for the heroes. Admiring his bravery and determination to protect his friends, Adrien Agreste recommends to Ladybug that she choose Luka as the holder of the Snake Miraculous instead, knowing that he would make better use of the Miraculous's powers.

Luka chooses to leave Paris to protect the identities of Ladybug and Cat Noir.

Luka chooses to leave Paris to protect the identities of Ladybug and Cat Noir.

He is also very understanding and patient, always willing to listen to anyone who needs it. After ending his relationship with Marinette in "Truth", despite being sad, he decides to respect Marinette's willingness to keep secrets and support her in her crush on Adrien. Upon discovering Marinette and Adrien's identities as superheroes in "Wishmaker", aware of the rules and the need for heroes to maintain secrecy, Luka understood that the city needed Ladybug and Cat Noir and resolved to protect their identities. In "Migration", Luka had no problem acting as the mediator for his family and friends making time for each one and he's willing to give those who have done wrong or bad a second chance but to the point of naivety as he was tricked by Bob Roth into signing his contract without reading it first. Upon realizing his mistake, he refused to work for Bob to fill his endless greed nor leave his friends behind to where he resisted his own akumatization to protect Ladybug and Cat Noir.

Luka is angry about Bob Roth's despicable behavior.

Luka is angry about Bob Roth's despicable behavior.

Despite his calm and relaxed nature, he sometimes loses his calm if he feels that he and mainly his friends are being wronged, demonstrating that he has his limits when it comes to patience in certain situations. In "Silencer", when Bob Roth stole his band's music, dance, and outfits and claimed them to be XY's, Luka joined Marinette to confront them. Although he remained somewhat composed, realizing they couldn't reason with him, witnessing Bob threaten Marinette with ruining her future in the fashion industry only fueled Luka's frustration and desire to make them pay grew to the point that he was akumatized. In "Mister Agreste", when Viperbug confesses that Gabriel Agreste was Monarch and the lies she has told the world about what happened in their final fight for fear that Adrien could be akumatized if he discovered the truth, Luka loses his temper and impulsively asks Marinette for the Ladybug Miraculous in an attempt to solve the situation, but Viperbug uses Second Chance before he can do anything.

Luka and Marinette reconcile and continue as friends.

Luka and Marinette reconcile and continue as friends.

Although he is usually self-assured, he can sometimes be insecure and hides his own feelings so as not to upset the one he loves. His greatest source of insecurity lies in his crush on Marinette, since, as Marinette herself notes, Luka gets akumatized twice because of his feelings for her and ends up very depressed after their breakup in "Truth". He is saddened by Marinette's avoidance of him to the point of almost being akumatized in "Crocoduel", something that is prevented with the help of his friends, later reconciling with Marinette and continuing as friends. In "Mister Agreste", it is revealed that Luka returned to Rio de Janeiro despite Monarch's defeat because he still has feelings for Marinette, but since she and Adrien are together and happy, he fears that this could lead to jealousy and ruin their friendship, as well as making him a victim of an akuma from the new holder of the Butterfly Miraculous, asking Irupé to pretend to be his new girlfriend in front of Marinette to make her believe he has moved on from her.

After using the Second Chance, Viperion discovers how to defeat Desperada.

After using the Second Chance, Viperion discovers how to defeat Desperada.

As Viperion, most of Luka's personality remains intact, especially his wisdom, which he uses to offer ideas and suggestions to his allies during missions. Like a snake, he is focused and observant, using his abilities strategically in battle to ensure victory. As the oldest of the Miraculers, he often acts as a support for his teammates and isn't afraid to put himself in danger to protect them from villain attacks.

As Silencer, his main goal was to make Bob Roth tell the truth regarding the fact he stole the Kitty Section's song as he took the voices of anyone that could serve his purposes or get in his way. Despite his villainous nature, he still retained his care for Marinette, as she was the only person whose voice he spared, and he reassured her he would make "justice" for her and Kitty Section.

As Truth, his views on trust and honesty were warped. He was shown to be desperate to know Marinette's secret, interrogating anyone that could possibly know it, like her best friends and her parents while proclaiming he always told the truth. He was shown to get frustrated quite easily when they kept telling him a secret he already knows. However, he could prioritize other secrets when they had a much bigger meaning to him, like when he made his mother confess to him who his father was. He was violent and aggressive as he was upset about Jagged Stone being his father and abandoning him to where he threw Jagged away off a roof, and wouldn't hesitate to attack anyone who got in his way of knowing someone's secret.

Abilities

As a Civilian

Luka is excellent at playing his guitar, claiming to have played guitar since he was a baby, and similar musical instruments like the violin and he seems to have a specialty for fingerstyle guitar. He is particularly good at creating melodies through people's emotions.

In "Frozer", Luka was shown to be very good at ice skating, as well as fairly strong, lifting Marinette with ease. Luka can also ride a bike, as shown when he was delivering pizzas in "Heart Hunter", and the numerous times he has given Marinette a ride. In "Wishmaker", Luka is a good swimmer, as he was able to save his dad from drowning.

Sometime after "Migration" but before "Re-Creation", Luka met Su-Han and the Order of the Guardians. From them, he learned Mirakung Fu after spending time with the order and briefly returned to Paris as a martial artist who can go toe-to-toe with Miraculized villains without any superpowers.

As Viperion

Viperion calling upon his superpower, Second Chance.

Viperion calling upon his superpower, Second Chance.

Viperion has enhanced capabilities such as speed, agility, and strength, and he is almost invulnerable to physical damage. These abilities allow him to react to and evade akumatized villains attacks, as well as jump and leap several times his height and length. Like a snake, he also has enhanced senses like hearing, smell, and infrared vision. His tool is a lyre, which allows him to defend himself against enemy attacks and use it as a communication device to contact any superhero on his team.

His special superpower is Second Chance. With this, he marks a moment in time by sliding back the snake head on his Miraculous, and the snake head slowly returns to its place over the course of five minutes. Then, when needed, he slides the snake's head back again, reversing time to the point he marked. This gives him the opportunity to change the outcome of a recent event. He is able to go back to the marked moment as many times as he wants before the snake's head returns to its original position.

In "Revelator" it is shown that Viperion has learned to control his adult powers, allowing him to not detransform back and use Second Chance as much as he wishes.

Silencer could steal people's voices by touching their lips with his two fingers and making a shushing motion; the voice would then escape from the person as a jellyfish-like entity. Once their voices were out, he could store them inside his helmet, and then he could talk with them using his hands, like a hand puppet. He could also use more than one voice at a time. If his power was used on a Miraculous holder, he could render them virtually powerless unless he said the invocations in their place. However, the victims could reclaim their voice if they got the jellyfish-like entity before he did or If his helmet was destroyed, all the voices were freed from within it.

Truth was able to shoot beams from his third eye on his forehead, which forced people to tell them the truth. Those hit by the beam had bigger sclera, smaller pupils, and white lipstick, similar to the black lipstick worn by the victims of Dark Cupid. Once hit, the victim would have to answer truthfully to any question Truth asks. He had total control over his sentimonster who let him immobilize anyone he enlightened, allowing Truth to listen to his victim without them trying to leave or escape.

Etymology

  • His full name means "light of/from the coffin".
    • The name Luka is an Eastern European variant of a name that derives either (or both) from the name of a region in Italy[14] or from Latin lūx, lūcis, meaning "light".
      • In the Russian dub, his name is changed to Luke.
    • Luka's surname Couffaine is a combination of "couffin" (French for "coffin") and the French suffix "-aine" (meaning "of or from a place"), ultimately meaning "of/from the coffin".
      • All the Couffaine's names so far end with "-ka".
        • However, it is actually a pun, as a matter of fact in French it sounds like "acouphène" which means "tinnitus".
      • When the official Miraculous Ladybug website got updated in September 2020, the official character description has his surname incorrectly spelled as Couphène.[15]
  • Viperion's name is likely a portmanteau of viper (a family of venomous snakes) and Hyperion, a Titan of Greek mythology associated with the sun and daytime.
    • In Greek mythology, the priestess of the oracle at Delphi was known as Pythia, stemming from the giant snake slain by Apollo (another god of the sun) "in the strength of Hyperion (day)".
      • Apollo is also known to have a lyre.

Trivia

Revealed by the Staff

  • Luka was first revealed in a French synopsis for Season 2 on Le Figaro.[10]
    • He was later revealed to be Juleka Couffaine's older brother in a Brazilian synopsis for Season 2 on O Universo da TV.[12]
  • Lindalee Rose hinted at the possibility that Luka and Juleka's father is Jagged Stone, which is revealed and confirmed in "Truth".
  • Thomas Astruc had originally stated that Luka is approximately two years older than Juleka.[16] This was later changed to them being twins.[17] However, he is still older than the rest of the main cast, as Juleka failed a year of school and thus had to repeat it. At the very least, he and his twin sister are around 15/16.[18]
  • According to Feri González, Luka is a handsome boy, and people "are going to fall in love with him."[19]
    • She also noted that both Luka and Kagami Tsurugi are "charming, rounded characters" who are not limited to roles as alternate love interests.[20]
  • Viperion was first revealed in concept art shown at the 2018 Comic-Con Experience panel on December 6, 2018.[21]

Miraculous Holder and Akumatized Villains

  • Following Alya Césaire, Nino Lahiffe, Chloé Bourgeois, and Nathalie Sancoeur, he is the fifth person to become a Miraculous holder and akumatized villain, excluding Gabriel Agreste, who akumatized himself.
  • Luka proves to be a better user of the Snake Miraculous and its power than Adrien, as Adrien wasn't able to beat Desperada after 25,913 times, while Luka was able to defeat her after 4 times. Although an exact number wasn't directly confirmed, it was definitely in a faster time span in comparison to Adrien's attempts. However, this might also be because Cat Noir was helping Luka while Cat Noir couldn't help Adrien (because they're the same person).
    • Also Adrien was distracted and love-struck while Luka was more cool, calm, observant and focused which is the exact description Master Fu used to describe the Snake Miraculous.
  • Both Hawk Moth (in "Party Crasher") and Ladybug (in "Miracle Queen") have said that Viperion is one of the most difficult superheroes to be against because of his superpower.
  • Luka is the third person to try to resist Akumatization, following Caline Bustier and Chloé Bourgeois, but is unable to prevent it from happening, much like how it happened with Miss Bustier in "Zombizou". However, in "Migration" he was able to resist akumatization by destroying his akumatized object.
  • Truth is the only villain who still identifies as his civilian identity despite being akumatized, calling himself "Luka Couffaine" in front of Jagged Stone.
    • Although he could have introduced himself as such to be specific and receive a clear answer from Jagged.
    • Additionally, this may or may not tie in with his line to Shadow Moth, "I always tell the truth".
  • As of "Wishmaker", he is the fifth member of the French Miraculous superhero team (and 2nd chronologically) to know Ladybug's civilian identity.
    • The others are Alya Césaire, Kagami Tsurugi, Félix Fathom and Alix Kubdel (the latter will find out in the future).
    • He is the 1st of the French Miraculous superhero team to know Cat Noir's civilian identity.
    • He is also the only member of the French Miraculous superhero team to know both Ladybug and Cat Noir's civilian identities.
    • He is the second human to know both Ladybug and Cat Noir's civilian identities, the first being Master Fu, although Fu has forgotten due to his amnesia, making Luka the only person to know both identities.
    • Unlike other people, both Ladybug and Cat Noir were unaware that Luka had discovered their civilian identities until the events of "Migration". They only knew one of those people they knew and that was the previous guardian, Master Fu.
  • Following Master Fu and Marinette, Luka is the third person to become a Guardian and Miraculous holder.
  • So far, Luka, Zoé and Marc are the only members of the French Miraculous superhero team that have not met nor interacted with Lila/Cerise, who in Season 6 onwards becomes the supervillain Chrysalis.
  • Currently, five characters know Luka is Viperion: Adrien, Marinette, Nathalie, Chloé, and Su-Han.
    • Adrien was the one who suggested Ladybug give the Snake Miraculous to Luka in "Desperada", and following Adrien's suggestion, Ladybug gave the Snake Miraculous to Luka.
    • Nathalie and Chloé found out in "Miracle Queen".
    • Gabriel also found out in "Miracle Queen", but due to him sacrificing himself, he no longer is alive and only five people know.
    • Su-Han sees Luka return the Snake Miraculous to Ladybug in "Ephemeral".
  • Luka is the first and so far the only Miraculous holder known to date who knows Mirakung Fu.
  • Luka is the first known Miraculous holder to deliberately ask Ladybug to lend him her own Miraculous to resolve a situation.
    • The way Luka borrows Ladybug's Miraculous is similar to Chrysalis's mental silhouette when she asks the akumatized person to choose their villain name.

Miscellaneous

  • Internationally, Luka debuted in "Captain Hardrock". However, the episode was released out of order and Luka's actual debut in production order was a background appearance in "Frightningale".
    • The same happened with Marc Anciel, who originally appeared for the first time in "Reverser".
  • As shown in "Heart Hunter", Luka works as a pizza delivery guy.
  • As of "Crocoduel", he's the only member of the Couffaine family who doesn't own a Magical Charm.
    • He is also the only member of his family to have two akumatized forms, Silencer and Truth.
  • It is revealed in "Wishmaker" that Luka goes to a different school unlike the other main characters who go to Collège Françoise Dupont.
  • He is the eldest of all of his friends as civilians and of the French Miraculous superhero team.
  • Luka, Alix, Kagami, and Félix, are the only members of the Miraculers who aren't in the Resistance.
  • In "Miraculous: Paris Under Siege", after André Bourgeois cancelled the Aset exhibition due to the centerpiece being broken, due to the anger at his hard work going to waste he was reakumatized into Truth alongside Lady Wifi, Sole Crusher, and The Bubbler, working with Stormy Weather to take over Paris using Aset's power.
  • In "Mister Agreste," Luka becomes the first person to discover the truth about Gabriel Agreste being Monarch, besides those who already knew. He's also the first person Marinette reveals the truth to. Although he doesn't remember, as Ladybug used the power of the Snake Miraculous: Second Chance to reveal it to him and then rewinded it, erasing the event.
    • After him, Rena Rouge also discovered the truth, although she doesn't remember it either, as her memory was erased by Cat Noir. Interestingly, their reactions to discovering the truth were quite different: While Luka was completely surprised and desperate by the revelation, Rena Rouge, in turn, was completely angered by Ladybug's lie, with their relationship even being affected.
      • It seems pretty clear that Luka's reaction was based on the fact that he knows Adrien is Cat Noir, and that this makes the situation even more complicated than Ladybug believes. To the point where he asks her to lend him the Ladybug Miraculous so he can fix everything, though he doesn't reveal to her what he intends to do.
