EA Sports has announced its next Madden game will be called Madden NFL 25, after the franchise's 25th anniversary. It's coming August 27.
Steve Watts February 1, 2013 11:30 AM 18We started to hear rumblings yesterday, but today EA Sports made it official: the next game in its football franchise will be named Madden NFL 25, and it's coming on August 27. The title is a clear break from its usual naming convention, which would otherwise call this year's edition "Madden NFL 14."
This year's cover athlete will once again be chosen by a bracketed voting competition, but this year it will pay some homage to the series' long history with classic players in the mix. One 32-player bracket will be composed of all-time greats, and a separate 32-player bracket will feature modern players. In the final round, the last man standing from each bracket will go head-to-head. Will influence and legacy beat modern-day fame? Probably not, but you never know. Voting begins in March.
The name is in honor of the franchise's 25th anniversary, leaving it a mystery what we should expect from next year's game. It may go back to tradition with Madden NFL 15, or EA Sports could intend to break from titles that call attention to their annualized nature.

reply February 1, 2013 11:38 AM I sincerely hope that this is the start to EA breaking the annualized naming of their sports franchises. So many games are just roster updates with marginal changes from the previous year. They should just focus on making revolutionary changes once every 2-3 years and then focus on roster changes and fixes on the off years.

reply February 1, 2013 12:56 PM No quite the contrary, this now frees EA from the shackles of a yearly release, now they can release a new game every 3-4 months.

reply February 1, 2013 11:40 AM So I guess they're hosed when 2025 comes around. Either that or they'll call it Madden XXV like Superbowl numbering.

reply February 1, 2013 1:32 PM Nine years is more than enough for them to not give a fuck. See: Need for Speed Most Wanted, Syndicate, Sim City, Medal of Honor.

reply February 1, 2013 1:22 PM If it's being released in August 2013 does that mean the next gen consoles come out before that date? I mean how can we have a game come out when the console isn't out yet? So no Winter release? That's what I was expecting maybe Summer/Fall release? Also usually games that come out when the new consoles come out are usually shitty. Only because the limitations of the system aren't fully developed yet. Remember Madden 06 on Xbox360? How garbage that version was compared to the PS2/Xbox version.

reply February 1, 2013 1:41 PM when did Madden 2006 come out? I assume they'd release in August on the platforms available and then a few months later for the new consoles if that's when they end up coming out

reply February 1, 2013 1:52 PM Madden NFL 06 is an American football video game which was released on August 8, 2005. It is also a launch game for the Xbox 360. It is the 16th installment of the Madden NFL series by EA Sports, named for noted color commentator John Madden. The product features former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb on the cover. It is the first Madden game for the PlayStation Portable and Xbox 360. all from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madden_NFL_06

reply February 1, 2013 2:13 PM right and the 360 came out that November with a different Madden, so I'd expect the same
- Lickuright
reply February 1, 2013 2:24 PM Right that's what I meant. It was different as in shitty version compared to the much better version in the old generation. I hope that's not the case this year.

reply February 1, 2013 3:47 PM it most likely will be the same situation as 2006

reply February 1, 2013 9:53 PM It was a different engine, and it was a launch title. And developing that game was probably the worst year of my life. On the plus side it opened opportunities for me so I just call it my dues for getting into game dev.

reply February 2, 2013 10:35 PM Haven't bought a Madden game in years and no plans to get one until the exclusivity deal is over. Madden is garbage and has been for 18 years. Gotta love a monopoly.
