Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Maddison
Maddison is an elaborate respelling of Madison. As a given name, Madison originated as the transferred use of a surname. The surname is derived from maternal ancestors and comes from the medieval female given name “Madde” which was a short form of Maud. Maud, in turn, is a colloquial form of Matilda (Latin) from the Germanic words “maht” (might) and “hild” (battle). Madison was taken up as a given name (for boys) in America apparently influenced by the 4th U.S. President, James Madison, who was one of the country’s Founding Fathers. As the name Madison became so popular in the United States, other English-speaking nations adopted this trendy name, and respellings begane to emerge – Maddison is an example of this. Maddison (with two “d”s) is currently a Top 100 female name in England, Wales and Australia. All About the Baby Name – Maddison

Popularity
OF THE GIRL NAME MADDISON
The original version of this name, Madison, was bestowed upon males at first. Then it became unisex. Now, today, it is far, far more popular for little girls. And Maddison with two “d”s is almost exclusively female. Madison as a girls’ name came into use in 1985; no doubt influenced by the massively popular movie “Splash” (1984). Daryl Hannah played a mermaid named Madison (a name the earth-bound mermaid chose quickly after spotting a Madison Avenue street sign). Within 10 short years, Madison was heading into the Top 10 position. It’s a wildly popular name right now, and has been for a decade. As such, Madison has become the poster child name for a new generation of parents. It’s bordering on cliché but its popularity is holding strong and other English speaking countries have responded to it as well (England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Australia, and Canada). Elaborate respellings were just waiting to be invented. Maddison came along onto the American charts in 1994 and seems to be enjoying moderate popularity herself!
