Pop icon Madonna recently turned 64 and put a few pictures on Instagram. Her pictures drew criticism not of the celebration but constant use of editing and retouching tools that she always does. But the weathered age-related criticism from fans is not new for her.

New Delhi: Over the years Madonna has drawn a lot of flak for constant photoshopping and editing the pictures that make her appear like someone who is not in her 60s but would also appear totally unrecognisable.

Most of her pictures are followed by comments from fans and followers who regret that the iconic singer has chosen to appear with an appearance that makes her look decades younger.

She turned 64 earlier this week and posted a slew of pictures from her birthday celebration with family and friends, from Italy. However, the pictures on Instagram drew a lot of criticism from fans.

According to experts, Madonna's retouched pictures are accompanied by various aesthetic arrangements that she has done over the decades. Facelifts, fillers, and surgeries with hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxyapatite, and polylactic acid are some retouches that end up giving a totally different look to the face.

The multiple-Grammy award-winning singer has been a warrior against ageism and age discrimination over the decades. “I think the most controversial thing I have ever done is to stick around,” she said at the Billboard Women in Music awards.

“I think that not only do we suffer from racism and sexism, but we also suffer from ageism,” Madonna had said earlier in an interview.

What is ageism and how are people discriminated against?

The United Nations has openly come out in defence of ageism that millions around the world face.

Every second person in the world is believed to hold ageist attitudes – leading to poorer physical and mental health and reduced quality of life for older persons, costing societies billions of dollars each year, according to a new United Nations report on ageism.

It has been a phenomenon that has sparked fire over the years with the advent of the internet as older and younger people have been stereotyped in public discourse and on various social media platforms. In some contexts, age has been used as the sole criterion for access to medical care, lifesaving therapies and for physical isolation.

Psychologists feel that bullying people on the basis of their age can lead to depression, stress, panic attacks and social isolation. Both older and younger adults are often disadvantaged in the workplace and access to specialized training and education declines significantly with age.

An estimated 6.3 million cases of depression globally are estimated to be attributable to ageism.
