PORTLAND (WGME) – Some extra help is on the way for many Mainers who worked during the pandemic.

13 additional coronavirus cases reported in Maine, no new deaths

About 500,000 Maine workers could see one-time payments of $300.

It's considered hazard pay for working during a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic.

Mainers work through hottest day of season

Mainers qualify for payments if they filed a W-2 last year and made $75,000 or less, or $150,000 or less for joint filers.

Those workers can expect a one-time payment of up to $300.

That money is part of an $8.5 billion, two-year budget agreement reached Sunday.

'Historic progress': Panel sends bipartisan budget proposal to Maine lawmakers

State lawmakers say the payments are designed to acknowledge the workers who kept Maine's economy afloat since the start of the pandemic.

If approved, payments aren't expected to go out until late fall.

The budget proposal goes before the full legislature for a vote on Wednesday.
