Learn how to shade Manga eyes using anime pens with Taniidraw

Eyes are one of the most recognizable features in manga; they're the most expressive feature of the face and can be used to clearly reflect the personality of each character. But, to achieve this, you need to learn how to play with color, blend shades, and create shadows and highlights.

Artist Tania Oksentiuk (@taniidraw) is an expert in creating Japanese-style illustrations, taking inspiration from anime and other traditional Japanese genres that she references in her work. In this tutorial, she gives you a series of tips on how to color and add sparkle to anime eyes with marker pens.

To learn more, watch the video below and keep reading for a step-by-step explainer.

Five tips for giving Manga eyes color and sparkle with marker pens

1. Gather your materials

First you have to realize that there are as many kinds of eyes as there are characters. You can go for fantasy coloring, or may prefer more realistic tones. In this example, artist Taniidraw chose to combine both styles. You will need markers in the range of colors you need for your eyes. She has chosen green, azure, turquoise and navy blue. Plus a white acrylic marker to add the highlights.

2. Start by shading your base

Start by shading the bottom of your eye green. Don’t forget to leave a white space above the pupil. That's where you’re going to create shine.

Blend the azure shade in before coloring the whole eye, to avoid monotone.

3. Create initial shadow

Now create the first touch of shade, for example using the turquoise. Create shade inside the pupil, then continue over the rest of your eye. You can go back and apply your first tone again.

4. Mark shadows using the darker shade

Now use your darkest shade and start outlining the shadow around the sparkle and the pupil. At this point you can allow the ink to dry, and come back and go over it all again using the same shade in a little while. This will give you more marked colors. Tania recommends waiting 3-5 minutes to allow the ink to dry, until you see it lightening. Keep going over your drawing using the darkest blue until you achieve the shadow you’re looking for.

5. Give your eye a sparkle

Finally, it’s time to give your Manga eye some sparkle. This will give your character a kinder gaze. Use white acrylic marker to give shape, so that the sparkle doesn’t look flat. Add another couple of dots below the pupil or alongside your main highlight.

Artists who reinvented their career by exploring new ways to create

How changing technique, discipline or approach became the creative engine of some of the most influential artists in history. The history of art is not a straight line. It is made of constant detours, breaks, pauses and restarts. Many of the artists we consider essential today did not find their voice at the first attempt, nor did they remain faithful to a single technique or style throughout their careers. On the contrary: they allowed themselves to change, make mistakes and explore new paths. In a creative context where stylistic consistency is often interpreted as synonymous with success, reinvention can be seen as a risk. Changing disciplines, abandoning a recognized technique or starting from scratch can generate insecurity, both internally and externally. However, this article celebrates the courage of those who dared to break with the established to rediscover their creative voice and push the boundaries of their artistic practice. Why Reinvent Yourself? The reasons that lead an artist to reinvent himself are multiple and deeply personal. In many cases, the change arises from a creative block, a life crisis or the tiredness of repeating a formula that no longer generates enthusiasm. In others, it responds to a change of environment, to new cultural influences or simply to the curiosity to explore unknown territories. Reinventing oneself does not necessarily imply abandoning what came before, but dialoguing with it from another place. Changing medium, technique or approach can unblock creative processes, bring new layers of meaning to the work and restore the pleasure of creating without expectations. In addition, opening up to other disciplines allows us to question acquired habits and escape the pressure to comply with a fixed identity.

The Super Bowl, much more than just football: music, spectacle and global pop culture.

From the match to the halftime show, this is how the night was lived in which sport was mixed with music, cultural icons and mass entertainment. The Super Bowl proved once again last night that it is no longer just the most important sporting event of the year in the United States, but one of the great global cultural rituals of the 21st century. For a few hours, American soccer took a back seat to become the perfect setting where music, fashion, advertising, visual spectacle and social conversation converge on a global scale. For millions of people, even for those who do not follow the NFL, the Super Bowl is a collective experience: it is commented on in networks, watched in groups, analyzed the next day. It is a phenomenon that transcends sports and becomes a creative platform where everything communicates. The game as a stage, the show as a global language. The game is the narrative axis, but the Super Bowl is built as a great audiovisual story. The production, the pauses, the timing and the staging are designed to hold the attention of a wide range of audiences. Each shot, each transition and each key moment are designed to be shared, commented and reinterpreted. But if there is one moment that concentrates global attention, it is the halftime show, a spectacle that is no longer measured only by the music, but by its visual, symbolic and cultural impact. In just 12 minutes, years of artistic career, aesthetic references, implicit messages and a production worthy of a world tour are condensed.
