Mary Berry tells us why she didn’t follow Paul Hollywood to Channel 4…

Mary Berry has revealed why she decided to quit the Great British Bake Off after when it moved to Channel 4. It was announced that the BBC had lost the contract to broadcast the popular baking show in September 2017 with Channel 4 having landed the rights instead.

Many wondered what the new home would mean for the much-loved show. And many were upset when they found out.

Mary, Mel and Sue all leave…

First hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins announced that they would be leaving the show. Stating that they were “saddened” by its move to Channel 4 and that they felt like it was moving from its “home”.

However, it wasn’t until Mary Berry announced her departure a few days later that fans really began to get upset.

Why did Mary Berry leave the Great British Bake Off?

Whilst Mel and Sue simply stated, somewhat humorously,  that they wouldn’t be “following the dough” when announcing their departure from the show. Mary Berry has cited that her decision was made purely out of loyalty to the BBC.

Speaking of her departure the Queen of Baking stated:

“What a privilege and honour it has been to be part of 7 years of magic in a tent – The Great British Bake Off.

“The Bake Off family – Paul, Mel and Sue have given me so much joy and laughter.

“My decision to stay with the BBC is out of loyalty to them, as they have nurtured me, and the show, that was a unique and brilliant format from day one.

“Farewell to soggy bottoms.”

Fear not as the BBC has repaid Mary’s loyalty with a whole host of fantastic cooking shows including last year’s Mary Berry Everyday, Mary Berry’s Country House Secrets and this year’s Classic Mary Berry.
