"Mary Jane's Last Dance" is a song by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. It was recorded while Petty was recording his Wildflowers album, and was produced by Rick Rubin. This song was first released as part of the Greatest Hits album in 1993.[1] It rose to #14 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his first Billboard Top 20 hit of the 1990s,[2] and also topped the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart for two weeks.[3]
Less Than Jake's Version
At the band's acoustic performance at the Virgin Megastore in Orlando in 2008, Chris Demakes noticed an older woman in the crowd watching the performance. After a brief conversation she said that she had a son who played guitar. Chris invited him up on stage at the end of the performance and they did a brief rendition of the song with Chris attempting to remember the lyrics.
Lyrics
She grew up in an Indiana town had a good looking mama, who never was around but grew up tall and she grew up right with them Indiana boys on an Indiana night Well she moved down here, the age of 18 she blew the boys away, was more than they had seen I was introduced and we both started groovin she said I dig you baby but I got to keep movin on (keep movin on) Last dance with Mary Jane one more time to kill the pain I feel summer creepin in and I'm tired of this town again Well I don't know, but I've been told you never slow down, you never grow old I'm tired of screwin up, tired of going down tired of myself, tired of this town oh my my, oh hell yes honey put on that party dress buy me a drink, sing me a song take me as I come, cause I can't stay long Last dance with Mary Jane one more time to kill the pain I feel summer creepin in and I'm tired of this town again There's pigeons down on Market Square she's standing in her underwear looking down from a hotel room nightfall will be coming soon oh my my, oh hell yes, you got to put on that party dress it was too cold to cry when I woke up alone I hit my last number, I walked to the road Last dance with Mary Jane one more time to kill the pain I feel summer creepin in and I'm tired of this town again
