Background
The Mathematics Clusters increase the opportunities for a career in mathematical scientific research and science education. Also, mathematical disciplines are further developed within a cluster.
Mathematics clusters - unique in the world - are a successful Dutch concept. The first clusters were established in 2005 to counter fragmentation of research and education. The clusters provide critical mass and focus on the mathematics research and education in the areas in which the Netherlands performs best. By joining forces, the Dutch mathematics performs excellent.
DIAMOND - Discreet, Interactive and Algorithmic Mathematics, Algebra and Number Theory
The DIAMOND cluster focuses on the algorithmic approach in algebra, discrete mathematics, logic and number theory. Amongst others, this research area focuses on research on the protection of digital data, the timetable of the Dutch Railways or the computation of chips for Intel.
NDNS + - Nonlinear Dynamics of Natural Systems
The cluster NDNS + investigates the mathematical background of natural phenomena, so predictions about climate eg cellular or developments can be done. The activities are carried out in close collaboration with researchers in the Earth and Life.
GQT - Fellowship of Geometry and Quantum Theory
The GQT cluster studies the intersection of mathematics and physics. The primary purpose of this cluster is to make the Netherlands an important player for this development area by an educational infrastructure for the long term, combined with a new large-scale research programme in mathematics.
STAR - Stochastics: Theoretical and Applied Research
The STAR cluster focuses on probability, statistics and stochastic operations research. The stochastics is ideally suited for modeling, analysis and optimization of complex systems. Stochastici contribute to a wide range of topics in physics and chemistry, biology, economics, logistics and technology.
Tenure Track Math positions in The Netherlands
Twelve tenure track positions in mathematics became available in 2013. Excellent researchers could apply in several expertise areas of mathematics. The available locations were spread all over The Netherlands.
Since 2005, four mathematics research clusters cover the focus areas in Dutch mathematics. These clusters bring together researchers having joint expertise in both research and education. A cluster cultivates an exchange of ideas by i.e. organising workshops and inviting foreign guests and gives new impetus to scientific research by the assignment of young and promising scientists.
The mathematics clusters are:
- DIAMANT – Discrete, Interactive and Algorithmic Mathematics, Algebra and Number Theory
- GQT – Fellowship of Geometry & Quantum Theory
- NDNS+ – Nonlinear Dynamics of Natural Systems
- STAR – Stochastics: Theoretical and Applied Research
