Mauna Loa is a large mountain and a volcano located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which can be found on the largest and the easternmost island of Hawaii. The volcano and the islands are located in the central part of the North Pacific Ocean and are actually parts of the United States of America. Mauna Loa is one of the five volcanoes that can be found on the island, it is considered to be one of the largest volcanoes on the planet. It is not the highest peak of the island as Mauna Loa is surpassed by Mauna Kea, another mountain located in the neighborhood which is about 125 feet taller. The total elevation of Mauna Loa is estimated to be about 41.7 hundred feet and its prominence is about 21.5 hundred feet. Mauna Loa and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are located in the southern part of Hawaii, and the distance between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea peaks is about 25 miles. Mauna Loa is an active volcano that has been in the process of frequent eruptions for over 7 hundred thousand years. The volcano has relatively steep slopes so during its latest eruptions, the lava could not travel down to the lower areas around the volcano with very high speeds. There is one more, smaller volcano, Kīlauea, located right near Mauna Loa. The area is surrounded by numerous smaller parks and natural preserves like Kipahoehoe Natural Area Reserve, Manukā State Wayside, Kaʻū Forest Reserve, Kaʻū Forest Reserve, and others.
