The name Mckenzie is a variant of Mackenzie which originated from a distinguished Scottish surname, which itself is derived from the older Gaelic "MacCoinnich" (or son of Coinneach, also son of the ‘bright one’). Coinneach was originally a personal name, a nickname, which came from the Gaelic word meaning "comely, good-looking.” Even though the Mackenzies have been a significant Scottish clan for over 700 years, the usage of Mackenzie/Mckenzie as a forename is unique to North America. The given name Mckenzie has become popular only within the past 30 years in the United States and Canada, originally among people of Scottish origin, but now part of a mainstream trend. Mackenzie has been used as a personal name for boys and girls alike, but Mckenzie has only a history for girls.
