In this Blog, you will be identify and know the different classification of Arts in terms of Medium.
So, are you ready to explore the world of art? Well, what are you waiting for let’s get it on.
Did you know?..
An art medium is any material used in art projects like sculpting, painting and sketching. Art medium options are limited only by the artist’s imagination and can range from common oil paints to less mainstream choices, such as playing cards, fabric or even pieces of garbage.
In a gallery exhibition you may occasionally see the media on the label listed as “mixed media.” This may seem obvious to you, as you inspect at the piece; look, there’s string, paper, paint… and you may ask yourself, why not just list the various materials? What is “Mixed Media,” and why is it a category unto itself?
“Mixed media” includes any artwork in which more than one medium has been employed. This could mean that one uses not only paint, but can include found materials like mud, grass, magazine cutouts, stencils, pennies, charcoal, etcetera. (Maia Stark, SCC Gallery Assistant, https://saskcraftcouncil.org/what-is-mixed-media).

2. ARCHITECTURE. The art and technique of designing and building, as distinguished from the skills associated with construction. The practice of architecture is employed to fulfill both practical and expressive requirements, and thus it serves both utilitarian and aesthetic ends.

(Fig.7. Built on an artificial island 280 meters away from the coast, the Burj al Arab in Dubai is one of the most luxurious and the fourth tallest hotel in the world. It’s 321 meters high and it represents one of the wonders of contemporary engineering. The building is designed by Tom Wright of WKK architects and its shape emulates shape of the sail of a ship.)
( Fig. 8. At first Hindu, then Buddhist, Angkor Wat was the most mysterious temple and the largest religious complex in the world. It was built in the 12th century by the Khmer King Suryavarman, intended to be the state temple and then his mausoleum. After Hinduist traditions were abandoned, Angkor Wat was dedicated to the Buddhist deity Vishnu.)

(Fig. 9. Probably the most famous Catholic church in the world, Saint Peter’s in Rome was designed by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gianlorenzo Bernini, respectively, with smaller additions by other prominent architects. It’s an elaborate basilica, and the most revered building of Renaissance architecture.)

3. MUSIC. Is a general term often used to describe thoughtfully cultivated music, particularly in Western societies, and as in contrast to pop and folk music. Art music is a term that encompasses music traditions that apply advanced structural and theoretical considerations with a written musical tradition.

4. PHOTOGRAPHY. Arguably the most popular medium in contemporary art, photography was invented in 1839. Since then, its various forms and styles have increased almost exponentially—longstanding approaches to the medium range. According to Berenice Abbott “Photography helps people to see.”

5. THEATER. also spelled theater, in dramatic arts, an art concerned almost exclusively with live performances in which the action is precisely planned to create a coherent and significant sense of drama. The performance itself may appeal either to the ear or to the eye, as is suggested by the interchangeability of the terms spectator (which derives from words meaning “to view”) and audience (which derives from words meaning “to hear”). (Retrieved from: https://www.britannica.com/art/theatre-art).

(Fig. 22. “Attention must be paid.” Indeed. Not just to Willy Loman and the sad realities of his life as a mediocre traveling salesman and the delusions that barely keep him afloat, but also to Miller’s exquisite modern tragedy about an average Joe. Both grittily naturalistic and ethereally dream-like, this one punches the audience in the gut time and again simply because it allows us to witness his heartbreaking final downfall while also allowing us to go inside his mind to seemingly feel his deep-seated pain.)

(Fig.23. This autobiographical play about O’Neill’s young adulthood scorches from start to finish. You can feel the rawness as soon as it starts, as a man—along with his two adult sons—strives to ensure that his wife remains serene after a stint in rehab for morphine addiction. It goes downhill from there as she starts using again and all three guys hit the bottle. Written from a place of utter rawness, this drama stands at a pinnacle of the American family drama.)

(Fig. 24. Its two parts, Millennium Approaches and Perestroika, give theatergoers a whirlwind trip through stories ranging from a man’s battle with AIDS to über-Republican Roy Cohn’s homophobia and his own realization that he also has the disease, and from the Rosenbergs’ legacy to a Mormon couple’s struggle with his gayness and her drug addiction. Digressions include fever dreams and trips to the heavens. It’s all exactly what Kushner promises in the piece’s subtitle: “A Gay Fantasia on National Themes,” and the boldness Kushner’s storytelling and unbridled imagination means that this one thrills.)

(Fig.25. Wouldn’t it be great to write a play that inspired a label for work from an entire generation of writers? This 1956 drama did just that as it took middle age (mostly) out of play writing and instead offered up a picture of life among a group of discontent British twenty somethings, pulling English drama out of parlors, dining rooms, and genteel patios, and into cramped inner-city apartment squalor. Long live the “angry young man play.”)
6. INSTALLATION.
Art is used to describe large-scale, mixed-media constructions, often designed for a specific place or for a temporary period of time.
Examples:

( Fig. 26. Was created by Cornelia Parker and materials were Wood, metal, plastic, ceramic, paper, textile and wire)

(Fig.27. A new exhibition in Melbourne delves into the connections between the artists who define their generations)

(Fig.27 and Fig.28. Are gallery based, computer-based, electronic-based, web-based – the possibilities are limitless and depend entirely upon the artist’s concept and aims. Almost any type of material or media can be utilized, including natural or man-made objects, painting and sculpture, as well as recent media such as film, animation, various forms of photography, live performance art (including happenings), sound and audio.)
7. BROADCAST AND TELEVISION
The Broadcasting – Television program at Algonquin College, recognized by the Broadcast Educators’ Association of Canada, covers all aspects of the television production process with equal importance given to technical operations and the creative side of production.
Examples:

8. CINEMA
The projection screen as a portal to investigation. We engage with filmmakers who create works that inspire the imagination and instigate conversation. Animation, documentary, poetic observations, and abstract visuals serve a broad spectrum of curious audiences while blending the methods and aesthetics of artists and scientists. Through our programming, we aim to provide an opportunity for visitors to explore the compelling people, places, and ideas that extend through the museum and beyond. Our collection of films and events offer a rich resource for public audiences, and also provide an important research collection for both our teaching programs and exhibit development teams.
Examples:

(Fig. 37. A look at the life and work of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.)

(Fig.38. In the midst of World War II, major league catcher Moe Berg (Paul Rudd) is drafted to join a new team: the Office of Security Services (the precursor to the CIA). No ordinary ballplayer, the erudite, Jewish Ivy League graduate speaks nine languages and is a regular guest on a popular TV quiz show. Despite his celebrity, Berg is an enigma – a closeted gay man with a knack for keeping secrets. The novice spy is quickly trained and sent into the field to stop German scientist Werner Heisenberg before he can build an atomic bomb for the Nazis.)
9. DANCE
The movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and within a given space, for the purpose of expressing an idea or emotion, releasing energy, or simply taking delight in the movement itself.
Examples:

10. DIGITAL ARTS and COMPUTER-MEDIATED WORKS
Digital art is a term used to describe art that is made or presented using digital technology.
The first use of the term digital art was in the early 1980s when computer engineers devised a paint program which was used by the pioneering digital artist Harold Cohen. This became known as AARON, a robotic machine designed to make large drawings on sheets of paper placed on the floor. Since this early foray into artificial intelligence, Cohen has continued to fine-tune the AARON program as technology becomes more sophisticated.
Digital art can be computer generated, scanned or drawn using a tablet and a mouse. In the 1990s, thanks to improvements in digital technology, it was possible to download video onto computers, allowing artists to manipulate the images they had filmed with a video camera. This gave artists a creative freedom never experienced before with film, allowing them to cut and paste within moving images to create visual collages.
Examples:

Since the beginning of the Technology, millions and millions and millions of arts have been created. Many have died due to lost interest and some artist and painters giving up on the idea, while others have thrived and continue to grow, like Camille Pissarro, Salvador Dali, Steve Wynn, Leonardo da Vinci, and others.
That’s for now. Thanks for visiting and continue loving my blog. I will be posting some interesting facts and trivia. See you guys all.
