A native of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Fox was born on May 16, 1986 and her parents divorced when she was three years old, so she was raised by her stepfather, Tony Tonachio, who along with her mother was very strict and did not allow her to bring friends over or have boyfriends.

Fox always wanted to be an actress

Fox always knew she wanted to be an actress and make it in Hollywood, so as young as five years old she started taking dance and acting classes, as well as being part of the local youth swim team.

"My mom said it was the only thing I ever said I wanted to do. When I was 4 or 5, I watched 'The Wizard of Oz,' and for a year, I asked her to call me Dorothy. When my mom explained to me that Dorothy was not real, that an actress plays her, I decided I wanted to be an actress," Fox told The New York Times in 2009.

After modeling since the age of 13, her film debut came in 2003, at the age of 15 when she appeared as an uncredited extra in the film "Bad Boys II" and after moving to Los Angeles she landed a few small roles in series such as "What I Like About You" and "Two and a Half Men," as well as appearing in the November 2001 direct-to-DVD movie "Holiday in the Sun."
