Christmas is around the corner and we all are looking forward to celebrating it with utmost joy and happiness in the company of our friends, family, and loved ones. Everything about the festival, whether it's the delightful presents, sumptuous food, or the fancy lightings, appeal to people of all age groups. Interestingly, Christmas is one of the very few festivals that is always celebrated on a fixed date, i.e.December 25. Ever thought why is it so? When the date of celebrating several festivals relies on various factors, why is Christmas always observed on December 25?Christmas, the holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, is celebrated by a majority of Christians on December 25 in the Gregorian calendar. But early Christians did not celebrate his birth, and no one knows on which date Jesus was born.There are at least three possible reasons why Christmas is celebrated on December 25. The Roman Christian historian Sextus Julius Africanus dated Jesus’ conception to March 25, which, after nine months in his mother’s womb, would result in a December 25 birth.In the 3rd century, the Roman Empire, which at the time had not adopted Christianity, celebrated the rebirth of the Unconquered Sun Sol Invictus on December 25th. This holiday not only marked the return of longer days after the winter solstice but also followed the popular Roman festival called the Saturnalia, during which people feasted and exchanged gifts. The church in Rome began formally celebrating Christmas on December 25 in 336, during the reign of the emperor Constantine. As Constantine had made Christianity the effective religion of the empire, some have speculated that choosing this date had the political motive of weakening the established pagan celebrations. Also, after Constantine made Christianity the effective religion of the empire, pagan customs would often be baptized and made Christian. This made it simpler for the people to adopt the new religion as they could be Christian and still celebrate all the festivals they did before.When the Christian church became much larger and more influential, religious and political leaders wanted to make the Christian holidays more popular while still allowing for the traditional celebrations people already enjoyed. Thus, combining Christmas and the winter solstice was the solution. As Christianity spread across the globe, so did the Christian holidays, including Christmas.
