Meta Quest 2 could be replaced by a successor as early as 2023.

This is what hardware analyst, Youtuber and leaker Brad Lynch claims in a report that also reveals new details about Project Cambria.

The Information reported in May that Meta plans to launch two new headsets in the Quest lineup in 2023 and 2024, codenamed Stinson and Cardiff. Lynch claims to have confirmed from his sources that the device planned for 2023, code-named Stinson, is the successor to the Meta Quest 2.

The headset, he said, is the next big leap for Quest and will replace Meta Quest 2 in the same way Meta Quest 2 replaced Meta Quest in October 2020.

The launch of Meta Quest 3 is set for Christmas 2023, according to the report. Lynch does not comment on Cardiff. It is possible that it will be a Meta Quest 3 Pro with expanded or improved hardware features, bringing the device technically closer to Project Cambria.

Meta Quest 2: A lifespan of 4 to 5 years?

With a market launch at the end of 2023, Meta Quest 2 would have been on the market for about three years. That is twice as long as Meta Quest 1.

Meta Quest 2 will not become completely obsolete with the launch of its successor, at least not immediately. Most new VR apps are likely to appear for Meta Quest 2 as well, since the device has a large install base.

Only later could more and more high-profile titles appear exclusively for Meta Quest 3. Big titles like GTA: San Andreas and Assassin's Creed Nexus should still be released for both systems and extend the life of the device.

Meta is working on PC VR future

Not much is known about Meta Quest 3 so far, but Mark Zuckerberg hinted that the device will get eye and face tracking. A new processor is also relatively certain, which is likely to be the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2.

A high-quality micro OLED display would be more likely for Cardiff. Lynch claims to have heard rumors about the Meta Quest 3's specifications, but he wants to have them confirmed by other sources first.

Lynch, however, is confident about Meta's upcoming PC VR initiatives. Meta is hard at work developing its Avalanche VR cloud gaming service and also wants to enable PC VR streaming from local computers using a special USB dongle. There are already hints of interface elements in the latest Quest firmware that show users the status of the "Air Bridge" connection. Lynch expects the accessory to be announced soon.

The Youtuber previously reported that Cambria will get improved PC VR support compared to Meta Quest 2.
