Early Life

Michael Dwayne Vick was born on the 26th of June, 1980, in Newport News, Virginia.

Vick is the second child of Brenda Vick and Michael Boddie. The family lived in Ridley Circle Homes, a public housing project in the East End section of the port city, a financially depressed and crime-ridden neighborhood.

Career Overview

During his college career, Michael Vick appeared on the cover of ESPN The Magazine and led the NCAA in passing efficiency. In his freshman year, he finished third in voting for the Heisman Trophy; the following year, he came in sixth.

During his Pro Day workout in 2001, Vick ran the 40-yard dash in just 4.33 seconds, the fastest ever for an NFL quarterback. The Atlanta Falcons quickly selected him first in the 2001 NFL draft, making him the first black quarterback to be the top pick.

The Atlanta Falcons

Michael Vick made his NFL debut against the San Francisco 49ers in September 2001 but saw limited use. Soon after, on September 23rd, he made his first pass to wide receiver Tony Martin and his first touchdown.

His first start was against the Dallas Cowboys, and he earned 234 of the Falcons’ total 255 in the season finale. Vick set several single-game career highs the following season, including in pass attempts, passing yards, and completed passes. Vick also led the Falcons to an upset victory over the Packers and was named to his first-ever Pro Bowl.

Unfortunately, before the start of the 2003 season, Vick fractured his fibula in a preseason game. This forced him to sit out the first 11 games, and he returned in Week 13 to amass the third-highest rushing total in NFL history.

After the 2004 season, Vick was named to his second Pro Bowl and finished second in the NFL MVP voting. He earned one first-place vote, preventing Peyton Manning from being the unanimous choice that year.

The Eagles, The Jets & The Steelers

After two more successful years with the Falcons, Michael Vick was suspended after pleading guilty to charges in the Bad Newz Kennels dog fighting investigation. Vick ended up admitting to funding much of the dog-fighting ring’s gambling side, and the Falcons ultimately released him in June 2009. Following a stint in prison, Vick signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.

After Donovan McNabb was traded to the Redskins, Vick was made the Eagles’ starting quarterback in 2010, and he was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week. He made his fourth Pro Bowl and finished second to Tom Brady in NFL MVP voting.

In 2001, Michael Vick signed a six-year rookie contract worth $62 million with the Atlanta Falcons. The deal included a $3 million signing bonus, which helped Vick earn $5 million in his first NFL season. Although the deal initially lasted six years, Vick renegotiated a new deal after just three years on the contract.

In 2004, he signed a 10-year, $138 million contract with the Falcons, guaranteed $37 million, including a $7.5 million signing bonus. Vick earned $12.5 million for the 2004/05 season.

Despite such an impressive contract, in 2007, Vick was suspended for his involvement in conducting a dog-fighting ring. The NFL suspended Vick for two seasons, and after he was reinstated, the Falcons decided to release him.
