Michigan Will Swing From 80 Degrees To Possible Snow This Week

We had a hot weekend for late April. Now temperatures are going quickly the other way, and the cold will lead to some spurts of snow.

While it was hot this weekend, it looks like most of southern Lower Michigan missed record high temperatures by two or three degrees. Many cities in the southern half of Lower Michigan warmed into the low 80s. Here are the high temperatures from this past Saturday.

After the thunderstorms and cold front passage yesterday, we are going to get into much colder air late today through Thursday. Here are the high temperature forecasts for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Tuesday will only warm up to the low 40s in the afternoon. Remember that our long-term average high is at 60 degrees.

Thursday we start to climb out of the cold weather. Thursday will still be around 10 degrees colder than normal, but heading in a spring-like direction.

And now the snow we have to think about. For southern Lower Michigan we can only expect an occasional short-lived spurt of snow. It should be just enough to make you roll your eyes back into your head. It will be a little different story for the eastern Thumb, northern Lower Michigan and especially the Upper Peninsula. Snow could briefly accumulate in those areas.

Below is the radar forecast. The snow will move across the U.P. early Tuesday, and then shift southward across Lower Michigan Tuesday night. The snow showers will end by noon Wednesday.

In the Traverse City area there could be spotty areas of an inch or two of snow late Tuesday. The accumulating snow will then shift into northeast Lower, with areas around Alpena, Oscoda, Mio, West Branch and Tawas picking up an inch or two Tuesday night. The snow spurts will also shift into The Thumb and possibly Saginaw, Bay City and Midland Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.

Wednesday morning will drop to a frigid mid-20s across southern Lower Michigan. There could be a few record cold low temperatures.

The temperatures will rebound somewhat by Friday, with many cities inching toward 60 degrees Friday afternoon.

This should be the last snowflakes in Lower Michigan this season, finally.
