It’s not a bad way to spend the evening, considering the “unusual rain and thunder” Miguel describes outside. “Come Through and Chill” was produced by Miguel’s frequent collaborator Salaam Remi, and it follows the Los Angeles-based R&B singer’s 2015 album Wildheart

With the addition of J Cole’s verse in this new version of the song for Miguel’s new album War & Leisure the rapper made numerous references to politics and social justice in this laid-back track.

Miguel explained the addition of J. Cole on the album track during an interview with Ebro Darden, saying that he felt that the song was very conversational, and that the Fayetteville rapper is “the best at that.” He added that J. Cole also played the guitar on the final track.

Cole on this song is such a no-brainer. This is like home. It’s always fun when you find good chemistry, and you find, really good energy with other artists—and on top of that, when you’re able to connect on a human “I fuck with you" level. It’s a healthy boost of energy. You just get that inspiration, and Cole is one of those people for me.

That’s how it is with Salaam. The energy between the three of us is just very natural. There’s something in the spirit of just the intention of why we do this. We love music, and so we’ve been really, really, fortunate to just make some good music. It was just a no brainer.

It really was a jam. Salaam has this amazing home in Miami, just out of South Beach. Every room, as soon as you walk in, it’s mic’d for music. You walk in, there’s a grand piano as soon as you walk in. Wood floors. It’s a professional recording home, essentially. Every room is patched into the control room. He had just recently built a downstairs studio, as well, which has a completely other dope vibe, and he’s like “Yeah, we got worlds.”

We had been working upstairs for a while, then it was my last day in Miami, and I wanted to get out, ‘cause nothing was really coming easy. He was like, “Man, just chill. We’ll order up plantains. He has mango trees. "We’ll get the mango’s poppin'.” We got some mangoes, just vibed. He’s like, “Don’t worry about it, we’ll order some Jamaican, get the jerk poppin' and just vibe downstairs.”

We went downstairs, he gets on the drums, and I’m playing guitar and we’re just jamming. It just felt like I was playing the way it was feeling that day. It felt really dreary. I felt like, “Man, this is kinda one of those days where I’m just like I don’t really have no energy. Clouds is out. I just wanna smoke right now and just watch a really dope film.” It would be great to have company, that kind of vibe. When you’re feeling that you really want your company, somebody to really console you. I’m calling my girl.

Then he’s like, “Just talk. How do you feel? Just talk.” He just kept saying that, “just talk.” I’m like, “Nigga, I don’t have anything to say.” There’s nothing coming. He’s like, “Here.” He gives me the mic, we loop the guitar that I’ve been playing for 15 minutes with nothing coming to my brain. “Hello stranger, it’s been a minute” was the first thing that came out. And the rest of it is just really a freestyle. Even, “Usually I don’t do this often.” I’m being repetitive because I’m just free styling. I’m not thinking about it. I’m just going with whatever’s coming. That’s pretty much how it all came about. It was really a rainy day and … Just telling a story, yeah. Perfect for the Netflix and Chill Mix.
