The four-year-old daughter of former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson died on Tuesday, less than a day after her neck accidentally was caught in a treadmill cord while playing at home.

Phoenix police spokesman Andy Hill said Exodus Tyson was pronounced dead in hospital just before noon local time.

"There are no words to describe the tragic loss of our beloved Exodus," the family said in a statement. "We ask you now to please respect our need at this very difficult time for privacy to grieve and try to help each other heal."

Police said Exodus either slipped or put her head in the loop of a cord hanging under the treadmill console, and was first discovered by her seven-year-old brother.

Tyson, 43, was not at home at the time.

The tragedy comes at a time of relative calm in the otherwise tumultuous life of the former boxer.

Tyson, who splits his time between Las Vegas and Phoenix, has been on probation since a late-2007 conviction for possession of narcotics and driving under the influence.

He is the subject of a documentary Tyson currently in theatres, and appears as himself in an upcoming comedy The Hangover.

Tyson, who reigned as heavyweight champion from 1986-90 and 1996-97, is a father to six children.
