It's meant to be a comedy show, but Miley Cyrus cried through her performance of 'I Had A Dream (Twinkle Song)' on Saturday Night Live this weekend.

With tears running down her cheeks, Miley couldn't maintain her composure as she belted out the track dedicated to her beloved dog Floyd.

Wearing a colourful yet bizarre outfit - with lights running through her fake blonde dreadlocks - the star became overcome with emotion as she sat at a piano and performed the balled.

Taken from her recently released album 'Miley Cyrus and her Dead Petz', a picture of the 22-year-old's dog, who was killed in 2014, was in a heart-shaped frame on top of the piano.

There had been laughter earlier though, with the star going after Ariana Grande, Drake and even the dentist who killed Cecil the Lion in her opening monologue.

Doubling up as both the musical talent and host, the star also performed another dark and moody track - Karen Don't Be Sad during the show - which was introduced by Hillary Clinton.

The Democratic US hopeful thrilled the live audience when she appeared in a sketch playing 'Val' the bartender, giving some life advice to herself - played by Kate McKinnon.

Thrilling the audience, Hillary mocked how long it took her to support gay marriage, replying "fair point," when McKinnon said it "could've been sooner."

The highlight though was her impression of rival Donald Trump, which even went down with the Republican himself.
