The Making Of...

Turn the page Turn the page The title 'milk and honey' was inspired by a poem Rupi wrote in 2012, where she used ‘milk and honey’ as a metaphor to describe the strength and resilience of Sikh widows who survived the Sikh genocide of 1984. The cover is meant to look like an extension of Rupi’s individual poems: where the words sit on the top left and the illustrations sit on the bottom right. The black and white colour palette pays homage to the iconic poem posts that readers have come to associate with Rupi’s work. The design is kept minimal. Rupi believes that if an element can’t add to the artistic value of a book, it shouldn’t be included on the cover. 'milk and honey' was originally self-published in November 2014. Rupi wrote, edited, land designed the book. It was later picked up and republished by Andrews McMeel Publishing in October 2015. 'milk and honey' is divided into four chapters. Readers are taken from a journey of trauma and loss and are lifted into a place of healing and wholeness. An important part of putting a poetry collection together means being very thoughtful of how the poems are organized. Weeks are spent finding the right placement for each poem in order to make the reading experience feel like one continuous journey. When making the illustrations, Rupi reads the poem and sketches the first image that comes to mind. She then draws the sketch digitally. Rupi uses a poem to give readers a sneak peak of what’s inside, along with sharing the chapter titles: the hurting, the loving, the breaking, the healing.
