They have laws now protecting the animals, and designated people are there during the filming to make sure these rules are met. Maybe this wasn’t enforced during the filming of that movie That was one of my favorite childhood movies and I still love it! It’s incredibly curte. The part where they’re floating thru the Dead Swamp or whatever its called, always spooked me! According to IMDB, this is a Japanese film *Koneko monogatari *, and filmed in Japan over a four year period. Although I cannot provide a cite, I remember at the time the American press asking questions of the people who produced the movie, and they stated that no animals were harmed in the making of the movie. I don’t know if I trust this statement; I remember the same interviewee stated that the pug pup “enjoyed” the scene in the water with the bear. That scene turned my stomach! Poor pup trying to keep from drowning by climbing up onto the bear and repeatedly getting pushed under the water by the bear.
