Minecraft: How To Get Emeralds - TheGamer

Emeralds are a valuable currency that you can use to trade with villagers in Minecraft. Prior to getting your first emerald, it can be difficult to find them. Emeralds may appear while you are mining, but this isn't too common. Thankfully, we are here to help you become an emerald hoarder, which isn't too hard after you build up your initial collection.

This guide will go over how to find emeralds in the world, as well as how to get more through villager trading. Emeralds have a few extra uses, so we will go over that as well; they are primarily used as a currency though.

Where To Find Emeralds In The World

Emeralds can be mined, but this is rare. If you want to find emeralds while mining, the ore generates more often in Mountain and Windswept Hills biomes around Y=232. This is incredibly high, and most biomes don't naturally reach this elevation. In general, just look for really tall biomes that tower over everything else.

If you are ever in a very tall mountain biome, climb to the top to reach Y=232. Emeralds can often be exposed, so you may be able to spot emeralds. To maximize the number of emeralds that drop, be sure to use a pickaxe that has been enchanted with Fortune. This will increase your chances of multiple drops.

Want a challenge? The rarest block in the game is Deepslate Emerald Ore, which can only be found from Y=-16 to Y=8.

Other Sources Of Emeralds

There are a few miscellaneous places where you can find emeralds, which we've listed below.

  • Buried Treasure
  • Desert Temples
  • Desert Wells
  • End Cities
  • Igloos
  • Jungle Temples
  • Shipwrecks
  • Trail Ruins
  • Underwater Ruins
  • Village Chests

While emeralds can be found here, these locations aren't the most lucrative in terms of emerald hunting. We suggest searching Mountain biomes or trading with villagers, which we will go over next.

Do Emeralds Drop From Enemies?

Yes, emeralds drop from certain enemies. This little gem drops from Vindicators and Evokers, with an increased drop chance if you use a sword enchanted with Looting. Both of these mobs can be found in Woodland Mansions, as well as in raids that spawn at villages.

How To Trade For Emeralds

Minecraft Trading

The best way to obtain emeralds is through trading. When you give villagers an item they want, they will give you emeralds in return. For example, if you give a fisherman villager ten coal, they will give you one emerald in return.

Many players opt to set up a villager trading hall; this allows you to trade with all of your villagers in one place, rather than seeking them out in a village. In general, villagers are pretty weak. If you don't protect them, they will probably die from a monster. With a trading hall, you can keep them safe inside.

How To Craft With Emeralds

Emeralds have a few uses outside of trading. Firstly, you can make a Block of Emerald with nine emeralds. This block can then be used for building, decoration, or making Beacons (you can also use a single emerald to power the Beacon).

If you combine armor trim, armor, and one emerald, you will also be able to put green trim on your armor. This is purely for aesthetics; there is no practical use for armor trim besides style.
