Minecraft is full of blocks, and many of them are unique to certain biomes. This can make these blocks hard to find. One of these unique blocks is podzol, which can only be found in two biomes.

In this guide, we are going to go over everything you need to know about podzol, including where to find it and what you can do with it.

Where To Find Podzol

Podzol can only be found in giant tree taiga or bamboo jungle biomes. This block can be found blanketing the surface and has a distinct brown color.

Giant tree taigas are biomes filled with large spruce trees. Around the base of the giant spruce trees, you can find podzol. In real life, podzol is a type of soil found around coniferous and boreal trees. Knowing this, it makes sense that you can find podzol around spruce trees in Minecraft.

Bamboo jungle biomes will also contain podzol. This is a mini-biome that can be found within the jungle biome. Jungles are dense areas filled with trees, bamboo, and cocoa beans. Bamboo is light in color, which contrasts with the jungle tree leaves. This means that while standing on top of a jungle tree, you should easily be able to see any bamboo in the area.

Mining Podzol

Podzol can only be mined when using a tool enchanted with silk touch. If you use any other tool, then you will instead get a dirt block.

To farm podzol, try using a silk touch shovel.

Podzol Uses

Podzol can be used to grow mushrooms, regardless of the light level.

In general, mushrooms need to be placed on blocks with a light level lower than 13. For reference, torches have a light level of 14. When planted in these conditions, mushrooms can spread to other blocks with similar conditions. With enough space, the mushroom will have a chance to grow into a giant mushroom, which is the same size as a tree.

With podzol, you don't have to worry about light levels. Both red and brown mushrooms will grow on podzol, regardless of the amount of light present. Additionally, the podzol allows for the growth of giant mushrooms. In the image above, you can see a red mushroom sitting on an area of podzol. After interacted with the mushroom while holding bonemeal, the small mushroom grew into a giant red mushroom.
