any body ever mix ammonia and peroxide together, i did this recently and am amazed at how much better it worked, its like by mixing em' seems to boost the cleaning power of both chemicals and the peroxide didn't wear out as fast as it does when i use it straight . i put a dirty dark raccoon skeleton in within 2 days it was super clean and really bright white.seemed so fast, before when using just peroxide it would take alot longer to whiten and i would always have to change out the peroxide a few times.

Never tried mixing them together. I wil have to give it a try. And you are talking about whitening right? Not degreasing!! Some people may get confused!! ;D

You might want to state the concentrations that you are using. Ammonia, ammonium hydroxide, is not compatable with strong oxidizers...Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidizer. If you are mixing 3% peroxide with over the counter strength ammonia you may not have problems. If someone should mix the higher concentrations of peroxide available with stronger ammonia , you might just get a boom! When you mess with the higher concentrations of peroxides, you are really playing around with rocket science! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_peroxide (scroll to "USE AS PROPELLANT") I wouldn't be all that surprised to find that your skull degrades severly as a result. an excerpt from the msds: MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET Ammonium Hydroxide Solution VAPOR DENSITY (air = 1.0): 0.596 @ 60F (NH3 gas) EVAPORATION RATE: <1 COMPARED TO: Ether % VOLATILES: 100 FLASH POINT: Not flammable (Flash point method and additional flammability data are found in Section 5.) 10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY NORMALLY STABLE? (CONDITIONS TO AVOID): Stable under normal conditions. Heat releases NH3 gas without violence in the absence of incompatible materials. INCOMPATIBILITIES: Strong oxidizers, including halogens. Acids: hydrochloric, hydrofluoric, nitric and sulfuric. Also reacts with acrolein, acrylic acid, dimethyl sulfate, gold, silver nitrate, silver oxide, silver oxide plus ethyl alcohol, hypochlorites of calcium or sodium, mercury, propylene oxide, iodine.

just mixed about 5o/5o regular ammonia and 3% peroxide really worked great at degreasing and super whitening with real speedy results , give it a try you should see a difference

As Cyclone said, this sort of thing can be *very* dangerous. For instance the two key ingredients which featured in the London tube bombs of a couple of years back was a mix of Hydrogen Peroxide and Acetone, two chemicals commonly mentioned on these forums. The resulting explosive from this mix is known as TATP, is extremely unstable and rose to fame as the material of choice for the Muslim Suicide Bombers in various places around the world. In fact as Hydroxide Peroxide is such a strong oxidizer it is an ingredient of a number of different DIY explosives..One of the common aspects is that the mixing temperature is often critical ie it often needs to be mixed over a bed of ice so that the resulting chemicals are at least reasonably stable and don't explode during production... I doubt 3% Hydrogen Peroxide would explode as such, but in some circumstances it might react violently enough to end up in your eyes or covering your face ect... Other fairly common household chemicals can also be dangerous when mixed..some give off chlorine gas when combined, which is pretty nasty stuff and could be fatal in a confined area, so it pays to be very careful with this DIY sinktop chemistry...

Good advice Pete E. When I was a kid, there were instances of women being killed by cyanide from mixing toilet bowl cleaners. I'm not sure which ones. Randomly mixing chemicals is a recipe for disaster.

FWIW ammonia and bleach is your standard DIY chlorine gas accident waiting to happen. It ain't pretty.

I have been using 35% peroxide, but when I went to get another 55 gal drum, they only had 50%. I needed to do a bison skull, soaked it for only 2 hours and was great!. Wondered if I should cut it, and if so, can I use city tap water. How much? I know it needs special care for it is very powerful if it will do a large bison skull that quick.

Did you read the peroxide article in the lastest breakthrough mag? Your post sounds just like the beginning of it....

I just saw this post and was just about to start screaming when I saw that LUCKILY, Cyclone had already responded. I have to admit, it never ceases to amaze me the number of taxidermists who insist on playing with chemicals without a freaking CLUE as to the dangers they're exposing themselves AND THEIR FAMILIES to. Things so mundane as dry ice placed in a sealed container or pouring baking soda into vinegar can create explosive reactions. Some of you people need a wake-up call.

I didn't think it was safe, that's why I questioned it. And after seeing that article in Breakthrough, my peroxiding went outside. I was looking around the shop and saw all these metal thingies that could just jump off into the peroxide and I'd never know 'til it was too late.

If you ever see what peroxide in its pure state can do you will never look at it the same. One of the refineries at Chocolate Bayou (can't mention the name) makes peroxide. It is processed just as liqioud oxygen. Pure sealed enviornment never open to the air until it is diluted. They had a dip shizit put some on his hand it ate it to the bone.

george good thing people post up things instead of calling others on the phone that way others can scrutinize wether it is safe or not. i think you know the post i was talking about with that whole laurier thing.

And people wonder why it's hard to get insurance for a taxidermy shop.......If I worked as an insurance agent, I know I wouldn't touch em either.
