Locations: There is only one Moltres in Pokemon Red/Blue and Yellow and you better make sure that you catch it for your collection. You'll find it on Victory Road towards the end of the game. Use an Electric or Rock Pokémon to attack it and try to put it to sleep and lower its HP as quickly as possible. Then keep on throwing  Ultra Balls to catch it. Remember that this can take quite awhile. Your best bet is to save right before the encounter and just reset your Game Boy if you happen to mess up.
This Pokémon naturally learns the following techniques:
LV 01 - PeckLV 01 - Fire Spin LV 51 - LeerLV 55 - Agility LV 60 - Sky Attack
Tips: Moltres is the third of the three legendary bird Pokemon. Although it looks really cool and packs high stats all-around, it isn't quite as effective in battle as the other two. However, this is mostly due to its type. Moltres's stats are actually quite impressive, with the highest Attack and Special ratings out of the bunch. All three bird Pokemon are dual Flying types. Articuno is an Ice/Flying Pokemon, Zapdos an Electric/Flying type and Moltres a Fire/Flying Pokemon. Sadly, unlike Articuno and Zapdos, Moltres doesn't learn the best attack of its secondary type on its own. But no problem -- after all, what did you save that TM 38 for all this time, right?

Like all legendary birds, Moltres only learns five techniques on its own: Peck, Fire Spin, Leer, Agility and Sky Attack. Forget about Leer and Agility. You should exploit Moltres's high offensive stats with the best attacks available. Fire Spin is a great start, even though it doesn't cause too much damage. However, it locks down your opponent's Pokemon and keeps it from retaliating or attacking with annoying status-altering attacks. This works especially well against Grass and Bug types. Moltres learns Sky Attack on its own at level 60. This is a devastating Flying technique, but it requires an additional turn to prepare for it. As far as other attacks go, Fire Blast (TM 38) is essential. Other good choices are Fly, Rest and Swift.

In  battle, Moltres is very strong against Bug and Grass Pokemon and should also be able to knock out Fighting and fellow Fire types quite easily. It's able to cause high damage against Ice types as well, but its dual nature makes it susceptible to Ice attacks, so be careful. On a sidenote, Moltres is the only Fire type in Blue/Red and Yellow that's immune to Ground attacks -- but remember that Fire techniques don't do much good against Ground Pokemon.

Like all bird Pokemon, Moltres's biggest weakness is to Ice, Electric and Rock attacks. But since it's also a Fire type you're well advised to keep it away from Water as well. When going up against Moltres, remember that its high HP make it a tough foe to beat. If you're having problems, be sure to bring in a high-HP Pokemon, preferrably equipped with Sleep and status-altering attacks.

This Pokémon can learn the following HMs and TMs:
TM 02 - Razor WindTM 04 - WhirlwindTM 06 - ToxicTM 09 - Take DownTM 10 - Double EdgeTM 15 - Hyper Beam TM 20 - RageTM 31 - MimicTM 32 - Double TeamTM 33 - ReflectTM 34 - BideTM 38 - Fire Blast           TM 39 - Swift TM 43 - Sky AttackTM 44 - RestTM 45 - Thunder WaveTM 50 - SubstituteHM 02 - Fly

Origin: Moltres is the third of the three legendary bird Pokemon. For Articuno, Nintendo took the Italian way to say "one" (uno) and attached it to the word Artic (as in arctic), for Zapdos, it's the word for "two" (dos) and "zap"). And for Moltres? Well, the word for "three" (tres) and "Molt" (as in molten lava). Another mystery solved.
