Threaded Mode Mounting GPS, Compass rgtoth Member Rep: 0 *** Popular Member Posts: 68 Threads: 26 Likes Received: 1 in 1 posts Likes Given: 0 Joined: Feb 2020 Reputation: 0 #1 09 Dec 2021, 03:50 I mounted Matek 5883 using strong sticky tape to a piece of 3/16 plywood boom that was mounted to the bottom section of Drone using same sticky tape. Moved compass outboard to minimize magnetic interference. Under power the compass, most likely, vibrates more than the Drone. My question is "should the compass be hard mounted to drone or ok with mounting as I described". Does vibration make a difference to performance? This is just a general question and is not associated with any problem at this time. What you might find however is that putting it out on an extended mount might cause additional vibrations in the quad itself which could upset the flight characteristics and may require you to do some tuning to eliminate that. Hi rgtoth, The GPS does not appear to be affected by hard or soft mounting. On the other hand, placement does have some affect, the antenna needs to be mounted up and it is good to get it away from the electronics. I mount mine high and at the rear of the quad. Similar to how the commercial companies mount the GPS except I mount mine higher. Here is a picture of the bare frame of my Katana-LR4 build which shows how I mounted the GPS. The GPS mount came with the TomoQuads Katana v2 frame kit. Here is a picture of my Ronin-MK1 ONE build showing my homemade plastic GPS mount. Although the mounts are different, the location of the GPS is the same. The TPU mount is fairly sturdy but does have some flex. The fabricated plastic mount has more flex than the TPU mounts but seems to work well and has no issues. Plus, the cost is nothing since the plastic is from a container that would otherwise have just been thrown away. Personally, I can't tell any difference in flight characteristics with or without a GPS.  The GPS doesn't weigh much. Plus, quads are not aerodynamic anyway. ______________________________________ My BUILDS  ||   My INDEX   ||  Parts Guide  <-- Download Reply « Next Oldest | Next Newest » Possibly Related Threads… Thread / Author Replies Views Last Post M100 GPS instantly heats up TintedSnow 6 128 Last Post by BadRaven 06 Nov 2025, 12:01 gps Acro Lung 3 85 Last Post by thiefcrazy98 29 Aug 2025, 10:51 GEPRC GPS M1025 series hawk01 4 1,041 Last Post by bettyvill 21 Aug 2025, 22:02 GPS telemetry on a Speedybee 405 v3 affeaap 5 1,387 Last Post by nobby 23 Jul 2025, 16:56 Adding a GPS to a BNF drone MeanLeanNerdMachine 12 1,021 Last Post by doraymon 23 Apr 2025, 10:37
