lawnspecialties L I have some MSMA and need to hit some bermudagrass this week against crabgrass. What type of results should I expect versus a Q4 or Drive? 95% of my issues right now is crabgrass fighting it out with the bermuda. I've never used MSMA. What other undesireables can I expect to see effected by the MSMA? Thanks #1 · Jun 14, 2009 I have some MSMA and need to hit some bermudagrass this week against crabgrass. I use 48% MSMA Ag. Grade formula at 1 oz. per K with adjuvant added.. Before I apply MSMA, I apply AMS first in granular form and then apply the MSMA. At different concentrations per K you can expect yellowing within a couple of days with adequate heat above 85 degrees. The Sulfur and Ammonia fert will chase out the yellow within a few days if you have good soil moisture. If not, water the grass 3 days later to help the lawn recover. The label states that bermuda grasses are succeptible to injury with MSMA at higher rates, and lower rates are desireable with repeat applications made at 2 week intervals for 2-3 weeks until the weed is under control. Some LCO's on this forum use Q4 with great results, but as for me, I achieved the control of the crabgrass, however did control the Bermuda too......it killed it!!!!!? My label on Q4 clearly states not to use on warm season turf and bermuda being one.! Drive--Facet--Quinstar, however is only one ingredient of Quinclorac as is pricey if used as a blanket spray and damage to the bermuda will be significant. Quinclorac is used as a spot treatment and is more economical. MSMA is more economical for blanket spray! In my Arkansas recommended chemical guides for southern turfgrass commercial applicators, Sulfentrasone is safe for Bermuda but Quinclorac is not..........even at reduced rates. If anyone else whom uses Q4 on Bermuda grass can add more insight to the procedures, I appreciate their input as it is not adviseable for me to say.........use it!! #3 · Jun 14, 2009 I also use MSMA for control of grassy weeds in bermuda. I use at a 1.25-1.5oz/k rate. I add surfactant and I also add chelated iron to counter some of the yellowing. It won't do much for any type of broadleaf other than ones with very shallow root systems. At those rates I am able to knock out crabgrass and annual sedge in one shot. Dallisgrass, barnyardgrass and others will take repeat treatments for a slower kill. (These require a slow death) I believe the label says to spray about 10 days apart but I have found a 5-7 day schedule works much better. It will take out most grassy weed with 3 apps at these intervals but I have found does not do a good job on foxtail, johnsongrass or bahiagrass at label rates. Hope this helps.
