Multiple Gestations - Center For Fetal Medicine

Multifetal Gestations

Understanding the type of twins or higher order multiples you are carrying is an important part of early pregnancy care. The key factors are whether there is one or two placentas and one or two amniotic sacs. This information is determined through ultrasound and helps guide a personalized care plan to support a safe pregnancy and delivery.

Types of Twin Pregnancies:

Dichorionic/Diamniotic (Di/Di) TwinsEach baby has their own placenta and their own amniotic sac. This is the most common and typically the lowest-risk type of twin pregnancy.

Monochorionic/Diamniotic (Mo/Di) TwinsThese babies share one placenta but have separate amniotic sacs. Because they share placental circulation, there is a risk of Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), a condition where blood flow becomes uneven between the twins. With today’s advanced monitoring and treatment options, early detection significantly improves outcomes.

Monochorionic/Monoamniotic (Mo/Mo) TwinsThis is the rarest type of twin pregnancy and carries the highest level of risk. The babies share one placenta and one amniotic sac. In addition to the risk of TTTS, there is a possibility of umbilical cord entanglement due to both babies sharing a single space.

We will work closely with your primary obstetrician to monitor your pregnancy and adjust care as needed. As your pregnancy progresses, we will increase ultrasound evaluations and fetal monitoring to support the health and safety of both you and your babies. There are many online resources available to help you learn more about twin pregnancy, and our team is always here to answer your questions.
