Mum Shares 'genius' Hack For Getting Pen Marks Off Fabric Sofas

A MUM has shared a “magical” cleaning hack for getting pen marks off fabric sofas – using hairspray and a damp cloth.

Sarah Rhodes posted a video of the clever trick to the Facebook group Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips.

In the footage, the mum can be seen dousing a biro mark on her terracotta-coloured chair with a generous amount of hairspray.

She then rubbed a damp cloth on the black pen stain and within a few seconds it had completely disappeared.

Ms Rhodes explained that she tried out the cleaning trick after her son scribbled the pen on her chair. “My son kindly decided to draw Biro pen on my fabric chair,” she wrote.

“Heard that hairspray and a damp cloth would remove it… and it did!”

The mum admitted she was sceptical about whether the hack would actually work.

She wrote on Facebook: “I didn’t think it would work but I thought let’s video just in case!

“Something very satisfying about getting a stain out.”

Dozens of fellow clean queens have praised the mum’s cleaning trick and the video has been liked more than 1,200 times.

“Wow… Love to see it when a hack really works,” one viewer commented.

Another added: “Good to see it in action, Sarah.”

One wrote: “This is a god send! Thank you! I’m now going over my couch with it!”

Another said: “This is magic. I am so tempted to scribble on my furniture just to try this.”

It turns out that it is the alcohol content in hairspray which helps to remove the ink stains.

Good Housekeeping advised that rubbing alcohol or an alcohol wipe can also be used.

Ms Rhodes is not the only mum who has shared her genius cleaning hacks with the world.

One mum called Clare revealed how she removed greasy stains from her young son’s hoody using 17p cola from Asda.

She posted on the Cleaning Hacks group, saying: “My son was helping his dad change the clutch on a car at the weekend and got a fairly new jacket covered in grease.

“I’ve read a lot of times about coke getting rid of oil on driveways etc so I thought I’d try it on his jacket.”

The mum bought two bottles of cola from Asda for just 17p a pop.

“I put it in a bucket with two bottles of 17p Asda cola and soaked it overnight then put it in the washing machine on a normal cycle,” Clare continued.

“It’s come up as good as new. Well chuffed.”

It turns out the carbonic and phosphoric acids in the fizzy drink help to break down the pesky grease marks.
