FORSYTH COUNTY -- The man behind the "house of horrors" in Clemmons was found dead in an apparent suicide. Pazuzu Algarad was found in his prison cell early Wednesday morning.
"Well, his particular case obviously, we cannot go forward, but it has to be dismissed," said Jim O'Neill, Forsyth County district attorney.
Forsyth County officials gathered the media to give an update in the "house of horrors" case -- the day before the main suspect was due in court.
"About 5:40 a.m. the sheriff's office was notified by the warden at Central Prison in the North Carolina Division of Adult Corrections that Pazuzu Algarad had died while there at Central Prison in Raleigh," said Brad Stanley, Forsyth County chief deputy.
The State Department of Public Safety confirmed Algarad was found around 3 a.m. on Wednesday with a wound to his arm, calling it an apparent suicide.
"Resuscitative efforts were attempted; however, they were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at 4:20 a.m," said Stanley.
Algarad was transported to Central Prison in May on a Safe Keeping Order as part of a joint request by both his defense counsel and the District Attorney's office.
Algarad was facing first degree murder charges after skeletal remains of two people were found buried in his backyard at his Clemmons home.
Video from inside the home showed a Nazi symbol painted on the ceiling and an unhealthy amount of clutter. The house was demolished in April.
Despite the case's notoriety, officials didn't find cause to celebrate.
"In any case where a life is lost, he has a family and friends. We don't celebrate the loss of life in these sort of situations. It's sad for them, and out of respect for them, we just don't have any further comment on it," said O'Neill.
The two co-defendants, Amber Nicole Burch and Krystal Nicole Matlock, are being held at the Forsyth County Jail. Burch is charged with first degree murder and accessory after the fact to murder. Matlock is charged with accessory after the fact to murder.
Time Warner Cable News reached out to Algarad's attorney for comment -- but didn't get a call back.
Burch and Matlock are both due in court on Thursday morning.
