Understand[edit]

Just a few miles from the Kentucky-Tennessee state line, it is best known as the home of Murray State University, a well-regarded public liberal arts school. There are over a dozen small companies located in the community. However, the city is dominated by Murray State University. The inventor of radio, Nathan B. Stubblefield, was a native of Calloway County. The first demonstration of radio was held on the courthouse square in Murray in 1902. Murray/Calloway County is a Rand McNally top-rated retirement community.

Murray State is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference alongside 11 other schools in five regional states. Major venues, all on campus, include CFSB Center (basketball) and Roy Stewart Stadium (football). The hot-button sport on campus is men's basketball, in which the Racers frequently make the NCAA tournament. Football has enjoyed modest success at best in recent years, but features a highly entertaining, wide-open passing offense. Murray is a member of NCAA Division I, but the football team is in Division I FCS, a level below the much larger programs in Division I FBS. However, an advantage of this is that tickets can be easier to get (and cheaper) than at higher-profile schools, though not necessarily for men's basketball games.

• Freedom Fest. Murray's annual celebration features several days of festivities (including a concert featuring a top country music act) centered around the Fourth of July.

Murray State University [1] is one of the highest rated liberal arts schools in the Southeastern United States, brings a unique cultural element to the city. The school supports athletic teams, known as Racers in six men's sports, eight women's sports, and one coeducational sport (rifle shooting). The best-known Racers team is the men's basketball team, a perennial invitee to the NCAA basketball tournament.

Until very recently, Murray was what's known as "moist", as opposed to "dry"—meaning that while you could not purchase alcohol in a store, you could (and still can) buy it by the drink. While this may seem a bit antiquated, it's better than the alternative. Under the previous law, there were no "bars" per se, as any establishment wishing to sell alcohol had to seat at least 100 & derive 70% of its income from food.

On July 17, 2012, Murray voted itself completely "wet". Due to waiting periods required under state law, sales of wine and liquor did not start until early 2013, while packaged beer sales began within weeks of the wet vote. It remains to be seen whether beer in restaurants will be as cheap as it was under the old law.

Several local restaurants (Big Apple, The Keg, El Mariachi Loco....) that had licenses to sell by the drink under the previous law will still be happy to help you quench your thirst. With the new law, bars are now able to open, and smaller restaurants that couldn't get alcohol licenses can now apply for them.

Since February 2014, Murray, as well as other parts of Kentucky served by area code 270, has had mandatory 10-digit dialing, meaning that when making any call within that area, even a local one, you must dial all 10 digits. This followed the introduction of a second area code, 364, that covers the same area. There is no geographic area code split—any new phone in the region may theoretically be assigned a number in either 270 or 364.

Because of the relatively recent introduction of 10-digit dialing, you may see an older 7-digit number (YYY-ZZZZ) on some signs. If you see a 7-digit number on a sign, assume that this number is in area code 270.

• Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. Just a few miles away is the beautiful national park Land Between the Lakes, (situated between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley) which annually draws multitudes of sportsman & vacationers from all around the country. Great Family activities in Land Between the Lakes include the Woodland's Nature Station, the Homeplace, and the Elk and Bison Prairie. The Nature Station, which has 43 species of native animal is a great family activity. Animal programs are conducted daily and the Nature Station hosts amazing weekend kids events, like the Cool and Crawly Critter Weekend. The Homeplace is an 1850's living farm with a homestead and fully functional farm. The Elk and Bison Prairie is a drive through attraction that lets you get up close to the largest animals in Land Between the Lake.
