Because chickens and other poultry do not have teeth, they need a hard substance in their crop and gizzard to help break down their feed. The gizzard is a muscular part of a chicken’s digestive system that "chews” food by using small stones, or grit, to grind the food. This helps them utilize the vitamins and food value in what they eat. McMurray Hatchery carries Grit in two sizes: #1 is a smaller size for baby chicks and juvenile birds, and #3 is a larger size for adult birds. Chick starter is typically milled finely enough so that baby chicks don't usually need grit unless they're eating something other than starter. But they will need grit once they begin eating treats and other foods, or foraging in the yard. Please note: we are unable to ship Grit to Canada. Email This Add to Wish List

Q&A

if the chickens (once grown) are foraging in a field with chicken tractor, do they still need grit or will they find the grit they need naturally? thank you They should be able to find grit naturally, however since they are still confined in the tractor and not fully free ranged how some people allow it might be a good idea to still offer it to the birds. You can either mix some into their feed, or you can put a small pan of it into the tractor with them so they have access when needed. I hope this answers your question.

Is this product suitable for Coturnix Quail chicks? Yes, the #1 chick grit would be suitable for quail chicks.

What is Grit made of, and will sand work instead? Grit is made from crushed rock. Sand has smooth edges and does not work as well as grit because chickens, and other poultry, need rough edges to grind the feed.
