My Alexa Is Lighting Up Blue: What Does This Mean?
Maybe your like
A few weeks ago, I woke up in the middle of the night to grab a glass of water and saw that Alexa was glowing blue.
My first thought was “Who is Alexa listening to at this hour?”
However, when I opened the Alexa app, I realized the device was updating.
I went back to sleep, but when I woke up in the morning, the blue light was still there.
I was a little confused as to why this was happening. Why wasn’t the update done?
After looking into the matter a little more, I found out what the matter actually was.
Alexa’s blue ring has different meanings. Solid blue for an extended time means Alexa is not getting enough power, in this case, you will have to replace the adaptor but a spinning blue light with cyan shows that your device is rebooting after an update.
Spinning Blue Light With Cyan Means Device Is Rebooting

Have you ever noticed how Alexa randomly lights up at night or during the day out of nowhere?
This indicates that an update is being installed.
Once the update is complete, it is common for the Echo device to reboot.
However, if you see a spinning blue light for an extended period (more than 15 minutes), this means Alexa is having trouble rebooting after the update.
In this case, power cycle your Alexa device. All you have to do is unplug it from the power source for 30 seconds and replug it.
Solid Blue Light Means Alexa Is Not Getting Enough Power
If your Alexa randomly lights up blue or has a solid blue ring after rebooting and it is not responding to your voice commands, this means that the device is not getting enough power.
It’s always best to use the original power supply that came with your Alexa device to ensure that it’s getting the necessary power supply.
Since smaller Echo Dot devices require 15 Watts and the larger Echo speakers need 30 Watts, it is always recommended that you use official power adaptors.
However, if you still have to use a third-party adaptor, make sure it has a 1A output rating.
Solid Blue Ring With Static Cyan Means Alexa Is Listening

If you see a solid blue ring with a static cyan light on your Alexa device, it means that Alexa is waiting for a command or question from you.
However, If after you have asked Alexa a question or asked her to do something, she still lights up blue with cyan, this means the follow-up mode is enabled.
If the Follow-Up mode is enabled, you can ask Alexa questions without using the wake word every time.
By default, this feature is switched off. However, when you enable it, after Alexa answers your question, she continues listening and the blue and cyan light stays on for a few seconds.
Here’s how you can disable the Follow-Up mode:
- Open the Alexa app on your smartphone or tablet.
- Go to More section of the app.
- Tap Device Settings.

- Choose the specific Alexa speaker that you want to modify.

- Click on the Settings cogwheel icon located at the top right corner of the screen.

- Select Follow-Up Mode from the list of options.

- Toggle off the Follow-Up Mode button to disable the feature.

Rotating Blue Light Without Cyan Means Pairing Mode
If you see a rotating blue light without any cyan light on your Alexa device, it means that the device is in pairing mode.
This mode is used when you’re setting up a new device or pairing an existing device with another device or accessory.
To complete the pairing process, you’ll need to follow the specific pairing instructions for the device or accessory you’re trying to connect to your Alexa device.
However, if you did not start the pairing process, you can cancel the process by saying, “Alexa, cancel pairing”.
If this does not work, power cycle the device.
Pulsating Blue And Cyan Means Alexa Is Processing A Command
When you see a pulsating blue and cyan light on your Alexa device, it means that a command or request is being processed.
This indicates that the device has received your command and is currently working on providing you with a response.
If it is taking to long for Alexa to process a command, either the Wi-Fi connection is spotty or Alexa is unable to connect to the server.
In either case, don’t give additional commands or ask questions before Alexa has completed.
In case Alexa does not finish processing the command for a long time, power cycle the device.
Alexa Flashing Blue When No One Is Talking
If your Alexa is flashing blue briefly when no one is talking, it might be looking for updates.
Alexa devices regularly check for updates to ensure that they are running the latest software and have access to the latest features and security updates.
When the device is checking for updates, it may briefly light up to indicate that it’s performing this task.
However, if the device is repeatedly lighting up, seems to be acting erratically, or if Alexa is not responding but is lighting up it is best to power cycle the device.
On the other hand, if you still want to be sure that Alexa is processing a command, you can check the voice command history. Here’s how:
- Open the Alexa app on your smartphone or tablet.
- Tap on the menu icon (three horizontal lines) located in the top left corner of the screen.
- Select Settings from the list of options.

- Scroll down and select “Alexa Privacy”.
- You’ll be taken to a webpage. Tap “Review Voice History” to see the history of commands.

- You can now view a list of all the voice commands that Alexa has heard during the selected time period.

In this tab, you can check what voice commands has Alexa processed.
