1928 - Leslie Applegate of New Jersey is selected as the first national FFA president

1929

1929 - First Michigan FFA Officer Elections (May 2, 1929)

Carlton Patton of Arkansas named first Star Farmer of America, one of the first awards created by FFA. At the Second National FFA Convention in November 1929, 33 states represented by 64 delegates.

1930

1930 - Official FFA Creed written by E.M. Tiffany is adopted by the National FFA Organization

1933

1933 - Blue corduroy jacket adopted as Official Dress.

1935

1935 - New Farmers of America founded in Tuskegee, Ala.

1937

1937 During national convention, action taken to establish a national FFA camp and leadership training school in Washington, D.C.

1939

1939 28.5 acres of land purchased near Alexandria, Va., for the first FFA-owned national headquarters; the land was part of George Washington’s estate.

1942

1942 - During World War II, when tens of thousands of FFA members are serving in the armed services, national FFA conventions are streamlined events where only delegates and award winners attend.

In 1965 the organization consolidated with the New Farmers of America, the organization for black agricultural students.

1966 - The FFA National Agricultural Career Show, a trade show especially for students, exposes national convention attendees to educational and career opportunities in agriculture.

Girls were permitted to join as members in 1969.

1969 - First National Star in Agribusiness, Ken Dunagan from Arizona, is named

1969 - FFA Washington Conference (now called Washington LeadershipConference, or WLC) begins

1969 - Women are allowed national membership, which made it possible for them to hold office and participate in competitive events at the regional and national level.

1970

New York's Anita Decker and New Jersey's Patricia Krowicki became the first two female delegates to the national convention in 1970.

1971

1971 - The National FFA Alumni Association is founded, providing opportunities for former FFA members and other supporters to become involved with their local student chapters.

1973

1973 - Official Dress standards are created

1974

1974 - Fred McClure from Texas is the first African American elected to a national FFA office

1975

1975 Food For America program launched.

1976

1976 - Julie Smiley of Washington is the first female elected to a national FFA office

1979

1979 First Extemporaneous Public Speaking Event held and won by Christe Peterson of Wisconsin.

1980

1980 The National FFA Foundation raised $1 million in one year for the first time.

1982

1982 - Jan Eberly, California, becomes the first female national FFA president

1984

1984 - Michigan FFA Foundation was founded at Michigan State University

1988

In 1988, the official name of the organization was changed from the Future Farmers of America to the National FFA Organization.

1988 - FFA opens membership to seventh and eighth grade students

For this reason, the name of the organization was updated in 1988 after a vote of national convention delegates to reflect the growing diversity and new opportunities in the industry of agriculture.

1989

1989 The National Future Farmer magazine changed its name to FFA New Horizons.

1990

1990 - Partners in Active Learning Support (PALS) program is launched

1994

1994 - Corey Flournoy of Illinois is the first African American to be elected national FFA president; he is also the first urban student leader

1994 - Corey Flournoy of Chicago, Ill., is elected national FFA president, becoming the organization's first African-American president and first urban student leader.

1996

1996 - FFA announces its move of the national FFA convention from Kansas City, Mo., to Louisville, Ky.

1998

1998 - The national convention was held in Kansas City for the last time in November 1998; the convention set an attendance record, drawing 49,240 members, guests and supporters.

1998 - Jose Santiago is elected to national office; he is the first member from Puerto Rico to serve as a national FFA officer

1999

1999 72nd National FFA Convention held in Louisville, Ky., for the first time.

2000

As of May 2000, farmers enrolled 31.4 million acres of their land in the Conservation Reserve Program to protect the environment and provide habitat for wildlife.

2000 - FFA continues to expand opportunities for agricultural career preparation by introducing one new career development event and two demonstration events.

2002 - First female Star Farmer is named: Karlene Lindow, Wisconsin

2003

2003 - Javier Moreno, Puerto Rico, is elected national FFA president; he becomes the first Puerto Rican and the first person with a native language other than English elected as national FFA president

2004

2004 First live webcast of national FFA convention premiered on www.FFA.org.

2005

2005 National FFA launched Seeds of Hope, a fundraising campaign to rebuild Gulf Coast states’ agricultural education and FFA programs following Hurricane Katrina; $835,699 in donations distributed to affected programs.

2006 National FFA Foundation receives first $1 million contribution from the Ford Motor Company.

2007

2007 - National FFA Membership breaks the half-million mark with 500,823 members in 7,358 chapters

2007 The National FFA Merchandise Center opened its doors in Indianapolis, Ind.

2008 FFA member networking site FFA Nation launched.

2009

2009 - FFA celebrates the 40th anniversary of women being admitted into FFA

2011

2011 The National FFA Alumni Association celebrated its 40th anniversary.

2012

2012 The National FFA Foundation received a record of more than $16.2 million in support of FFA.

2013

Board made the decision to rotate the national convention between Louisville and Indianapolis, beginning with Louisville in 2013.

2015

Endorsement of agricultural education’s long-range goal of 10,000 quality agricultural education programs by 2015, where every student is a member of FFA and has a relevant SAE.

2017

2017 was the centennial celebration of the Smith – Hughes Act, America’s first step in transforming education.
