t’s been 20 years since Christy Hargrove, an Asheville, N.C., wildlife rehabilitation specialist, founded National Squirrel Appreciation Day on Jan. 21 to encourage people to think kindly of squirrels.
While some consider squirrels a nuisance, they are good for the environment. Squirrels bury nuts and seeds in with the intention of coming back to get them later. Many of the seeds, about 74 percent, go unclaimed and grow into trees that replenish forests.
There are more than 200 species of squirrels in the world, according to the Taxonomic Information System. Those species are categorized as ground squirrels, tree squirrels and flying squirrels. The categories include about two dozen types of squirrels including albino, mountain tree, rock, white, black, gray, fox and pygmy, the smallest squirrel of about three inches, found in Africa. The Indian giant squirrel, which can grow to three feet long, is largest squirrel.
