After days of uncertainty, the Michigan men’s basketball team got the news it desperately wanted on Sunday: The Wolverines will play in the NCAA Tournament.

Michigan was awarded an 11 seed and will face 6 seed Colorado State in Indianapolis on Thursday.

The announcement was made Sunday evening during a televised selection show. Tip times will be announced later Sunday night.

The Michigan-Colorado State winner will face the winner of the matchup between 3 seed Tennessee and 14 seed Longwood. The matchups are part of the South Region, where Arizona is the No. 1 seed. The regional rounds will take place in San Antonio.

Selection Sunday had been a formality for the Michigan program in recent years, but not this time around. Michigan was squarely on the “bubble,” with various experts disagreeing as to whether U-M would be invited to the 68-team event.

In the end, the selection committee decided Michigan was good enough to make the field and avoid the play-in round.

The Wolverines enter the Big Dance at 17-14. They went 11-9 in the Big Ten during the regular season. As the 8 seed in the conference tournament, Michigan blew a 17-point second-half lead before losing to Indiana on Thursday afternoon. It made for a long wait until Sunday’s bracket announcement. Michigan will head back to the same arena, Gainbridge Fieldhouse, to open the NCAA Tournament.

Colorado State is 25-5 and went 14-4 in the Mountain West Conference. The Rams won a game in the league tournament before losing in the semifinals to San Diego State.

Michigan was a No. 1 seed in last year’s NCAA Tournament and reached the Elite Eight before losing to UCLA.
