CINCINNATI — The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio announced this week it has approved a plan to overlay a new area code for parts of southwest Ohio. The 513 area code is expected to run out of variations by late 2023.

PUCO approved the plan earlier this week to add the area code 283, but when it will be implemented has yet to be determined.

Officials said people who currently subscribe to the 513 area code will keep their phone numbers, but after 283 is added, all new phone subscribers will be assigned that area code.

An area code overlay usually requires a transition to 10-digit dialing, but that's already being done after a nationwide implementation of the 988 dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.

The 513 area code covers Cincinnati and several other surrounding cities, including Hamilton, Middletown, Oxford and Miamitown.
