New Horizons - How To Get Clay And What You Can Do With It
Maybe your like
When you're walking about town smacking rocks, one of the last things you want to see is clay. Iron is probably what you're looking for, but more often than not Animal Crossing: New Horizons will offer up clay. However, if you know what clay can be used for, you might be happy walking away with an inventory full of the crumbly soil. Here's everything you'd ever want to know about the common crafting material.RELATED: Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Do You Need To Water Trees?Updated January 23, 2022 by Belle Huston: Clay is an essential resource for many crafting recipes in New Horizons, so it's important that players have a solid understanding of how to get it and what to do with it once you do! We've updated this article with headings and extra details so that you won't be left wanting for any information.
Where Do You Get Clay?
Clay is found by hitting rocks with your shovel. When you hit rocks in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, they can drop...
- Stone
- Clay
- Iron Nugget
- Gold Nugget
- Bells (one rock on your island per day)
Once you know how to get it, your inventory will quickly fill up. Thankfully, there are a few ways to put clay to good use in New Horizons.
What Is Clay Used For?
Clay is primarily used for crafting. It can be used to craft multiple items, including (but not limited to)...
- Classic Pitchers
- Pots
- Ocarina
- Wave Breaker
- Water Pump
- Palm-Tree Lamp
How To Turn Your Clay Into Bells
If you don't need any of these items, we recommend stockpiling as much as possible. Then, keep an eye on the Hot Item listed at Nook's Cranny each day. These are items that sell for twice their usual amount. Eventually, an item made from clay is bound to be the Hot Item. When that happens, break out your stash of clay and get to crafting — your patience has finally paid off.
While New Horizons doesn't seem to prioritize the use of clay, it's still important to stock up on the resource. If you think you have enough in Storage you can always sell clay for a few Bells. It's not the best use of the material, but it is a quick way to get the stuff out of your inventory. The best use of clay is to craft the daily Hot Item when relevant, so stock up as soon as possible and go on a crafting spree when Timmy and Tommy need some pots.

How To Farm Clay When You Need A Lot
Method 1: Make Sure You're Getting The Most Out Of Your Island's Rocks
Six rocks spawn on your island for you to hit (though to access some of them you may need a Ladder and/or Vaulting Pole). Rocks are capable of giving you a total of 8 items. Surprised? Most people are! That's because when you hit the rock, it'll usually only give you 7 items or less.
To get that 8th item, you need to hit the rock without being interrupted. Just follow these step-by-step instructions and the image above:
- Stand next to the rock at a diagonal.
- Dig a hole beside you (on the side farther from the rock).
- Dig a hole below you.
- Stand between your holes, looking at the rock.
- Hit the rock as quickly as possible!
This method makes sure that your character will stay in the correct position and never get pushed back so far that they can't reach the rock on the next hit. If done right, you'll get your 8th item!
Method 2: Nook Miles Islands
Once you've hit all six of your island's rocks, they won't provide any resources until the next day. But you may not want to wait to get more clay!
To find more rocks, consider heading to a Nook Miles Island. These small, unique islands are covered in natural resources for you to exploit - including rocks! To get there...
- Purchase a Nook Miles Ticket for 2,000 Nook Miles at the machine in Resident Services.
- Take the Nook Miles Ticket with you to the Airport.
- Say 'I want to fly' and, when prompted, tell Orville to use your Nook Miles Ticket.
Method 3: Time Travel
If you don't want to spend your precious Nook Miles on Nook Miles Tickets, you could also hit more rocks by travelling through time. If you travel to the next day, the rocks will regenerate and provide more items when you hit them again.
