Nicolas Rossier, The Balance of Elements

October 29, 2025

Some people are born with salt in their veins. Nicolas wasn’t one of them. As a child, even walking on docks made him uneasy. The world of water intimidated him; he was afraid of it—until one day, at the age of seven, a metal fishing boat changed everything.

“How can something made of metal float? That’s not normal…” he wondered. The question sparked something in him. Fear gave way to fascination, and curiosity began to chart its course. Without realizing it, a path had opened before him. At nine, his father signed him up—without asking—for the Founex Yacht Club. Nicolas didn’t have the heart to say no. Despite his fear of sinking, despite his nerves, he went. First to please his father. Then, out of determination. And eventually, out of love for the sport.

On Saturday, June 14 at 1000., 404 sailboats launched into the 86th edition of the Bol d'Or du Léman. Despite an unexpected breeze during the first hour of the race, patience was required throughout the course to make the most of the very light winds. After 15 hours, 30 minutes, and 07 seconds of racing, and an arrival in the night, Sails of Change 8, helmed by Yann Guichard, secured its position as the top competitor in the TF35 Trophy (and finished second in the Bol d'Or du Léman, behind Realteam), ahead of ZEN Too and Ylliam 17.

“At the end, it came down to very little. We finished second overall but first in the TF35 championship,” confided Yann Guichard. “There is certainly a bit of disappointment because we led for a long time. But that’s the beauty of the Bol d'Or: it’s a race where nothing is ever guaranteed, and everything can change at any moment. Congratulations to Realteam for their victory.”

The 2024 TF35 season came to a quiet close today at the Société Nautique de Genève, as calm conditions on Lake Geneva persisted for a second consecutive day, preventing any further racing.

Having raced only three regattas on the opening day of the TF35 Realstone Cup for Léman hope Guy de Picciotto's impeccable scoreline of 1-3-1 secured them their first-ever regatta victory in the TF35 class. With strong third-place finishes at TF35 Mies, the Geneve-Rolle-Geneve, and Les Voiles de Choisi last month, today's victory sees Zen TOO propelled to third place in the overall ranking for the season.

After a light but successful opening day at the TF35 Realstone Cup for  Léman hope the forecast was for more of the same on day two, with the NE'ly thermal wind forecast to kick in during the afternoon.

But unfortunately, today, the gradient wind at a higher altitude was working against the thermal and the sailing breeze refused to blow. Despite delaying ashore until 13:00 and then the race committee and fleet holding on to the water to be ready to go should the breeze develop, finally, at 17:00, with the lake still glassy, it became too late to get any racing in.

Guy de Picciotto's Zen TOO made the best start today to the final deciding event of the 2024 TF35 season when they won the first race, took third in the second race and followed it up with another victory in the third windward-leward race.

Racing in a light but stable six-knot NE'ly Sechard wind was enough to see the TF35 high-performance catamaran foiling up and downwind. Still, the featherlight breeze put a premium on the skill of the crews boat handling and their ability to sail clean and out of trouble. In both the first and third races, Zen TOO started well mid-line, sailed conservable, tacking off early and taking a more central line up the first beat, and extended downwind to creep into the lead by the second windward gate.

With no wind on day two, the race committee led by PRO Benoit Deutsch was keen to get some racing in on Lake Geneva for today's final. At the morning skipper's briefing, the forecast looked promising, similar to day one, with the thermal Séchard breeze kicking in in the afternoon and the best racing near Nyon. So, the race committee went out to monitor the situation.

At the skipper's briefing, the crew welcomed the call to hold ashore in the stunning grounds of Villa Choisi to see if the thermal wind would fill in. Day two of the TF35 Nyon Cup started with a beautiful but glassy still morning on Lake Geneva. This, the first event of the six-stop tour of Lake Geneva, will be the first time the six TF35 high-performance one-design foiling catamarans have raced together since the spring upgrade of the flight control system, which will further improve boat stability and narrow the playing field for the crews.

After a long winter break, racing for the TF35 high-performance one-design foiling catamaran resumes this week with a new team joining the fleet and crew changes on all the boats ahead of the TF35 Nyon Cup. The first of a six-event series raced on Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

Eight months ago, season three for the TF35 concluded in Malcesine, on Lake Garda, in Italy. Throughout the 2023 season, Esteban Garcia's Realteam Sailing was an exceptional force, winning all seven events. For 2024, skipper Jérôme Clerc and tactician Sébastien Col's biggest challenge will be to keep the momentum: "This year's objective for Realteam Sailing is even more difficult. When you win everything, the bar is set high, and you can only do worse," Clerc points out.

Over the long winter period, the crews have been working hard developing the boat as class manager Bertrand Favre explains: "We spent the winter updating the flight control system. The first tests this spring have shown improved stability and boat behaviour at all points of sail, even in rough conditions, which was the objective".

We won every event this season, but it was tough on the water. We fought with Spindrift and  Ylliam XII - Comptoir Immobilier for every place. After a day in which Lake Garda offered up a strengthening Ora breeze and beautiful autumn sunshine, the battle lines have been drawn for tomorrow's final day of racing for the 2023 TF35 Trophy season. With four teams tied on points, it couldn't be closer.

In the overnight ranking, Jérôme Clerc's Realteam Sailing has taken the lead on countback ahead of Yann Guichard's almost equally consistent Spindrift. Alinghi Red Bull Racing are up to third by a single point over Ylliam XII - Comptoir Immobilier and ZEN Too, tied on points behind.

After a slow start yesterday, Lake Garda delivered an afternoon of technical racing for the six TF35 teams in a southerly Ora breeze ranging from 7 - 14 knots. On a day where it seemed all too easy to pair a good result to a bad one, it is Yann Guichard's Spindrift who has risen to the top of the overnight leaderboard by a single point from Realteam Sailing at this midpoint of the regatta.

"It was pretty heavy on crew work and decision-making today," explained Ylliam 17 tactician Torvar Mirsky. "Eight knots is the tipping-point for if we foil upwind or not. Because the wind was stronger on the left side of the course by the time we had decided, or by the time the wind had changed on the lake, we were on the back foot."

"It's been an incredible four days of Grand Prix racing. I think we've done a total of 12 races, going head-to-head with Spindrift until the last race. At 1300 the teams headed out hoping to get some classic Lake Garda racing in, but this didn't happen as the northerly, boosted by the morning storm, continued to blow at 20knots and the teams returned to the safety of Fraglia Vela Malcesine.

"Lake Garda is a beautiful place, Lake Garda is sublime, and it is theoretically a paradise for sailing.
