The NFL has relaxed rules on marijuana use among players, beginning with the new collective bargaining agreement.

The league's random drug testing window opened in April 2021. But the NFL's new program does not test for the Delta 9-THC-carboxylic acid found in cannabis.

All players under contract with an NFL team were tested for substances on the NFL drug panel from April through August 9, 2021, excluding THC.

Players were only tested for THC during the period between the start of training camp and each team's first preseason game. That is part of the annual testing for performance-enhancing substances.

What is the limit allowed for players in the THC test?

The limit for failing a THC test has also been increased more than fourfold, from 35 ng/ml to 150 ng/ml. Thus, players are no longer suspended for failing the test.

On the other hand, players who are elevated to the second phase of the program and demonstrate "Failure to Cooperate with Testing or Clinical Care," will be suspended. If that does not happen, failed tests will result in escalating fines.

The NFL implemented a severe relaxation of its marijuana policy last season, reflecting a general shift in the nation's attitude toward the drug.

The concessions are for player health and safety that the NFL Players Association acquired in exchange for accepting one more regular season game and less than 50% revenue sharing.

What do the NFL players say about marijuana?

To many NFL players, marijuana is a safer medicine for treating or alleviating pain, compared to opioids and prescription drugs.

Football's "Policy and Program on Substances of Abuse" still states explicitly that "the NFL and the NFLPA prohibit players from the illegal use, possession, or distribution of drugs, including but not limited to cocaine; marijuana and synthetic cannabinoids; opiates and opioids; methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA); and phencyclidine (PCP)."

The NFL reminds that "abuse of prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and alcohol is also prohibited."
