My daughter is 8 weeks old. Since she was 5 weeks she’s had episodes of nighttime crying that usually lasts 2-3 hours. We’ve discussed this with our pediatrician who recommended I cut out dairy (I EBF), try gas drops and ultimately that it’s normal and does end. I have cut dairy but I understand it can take several weeks to see a difference. We have tried gas drops and gripe water but I haven’t noticed a change. I usually bounce her on an exercise ball or walk her in her stroller during these times as nursing won’t calm her as it does during the day. Throughout the day she’s fine but once 8pm hits it’s like a switch flips. We live in a condo that we have owned for 3 years. We’ve always gotten along with our neighbors and most know we have a newborn and how happy we are to be parents.

This morning we were visited by a caseworker for cps. There is an allegation of constant crying and the caller was concerned for our child. So we know it was a neighbor. The cps worker only stayed a minute (she seemed annoyed she had to go out for this as I think she could see our child was well taken care of) but I’m scared to death and now I just want to move ASAP though I know we’re not able to just yet.

Anyone ever go through something like this?? Tell me we won’t lose our kid. I’m reading horror stories about this now. Like option Love option Hug option Funny option Sad option Wow optionLike Reply 21 CommentsNewest FirstOldest FirstViolation ReportedReport as Inappropriateuser avatardarlindanz

Oh wow. Sorry this happened. Child services is different state to state but I’m sure they will close the case. I wouldn’t worry at all. I’m glad the neighbors are concerned but if they know you they shouldn’t have called, they could have discussed it with you or offered up help Like option Love option Hug option Funny option Sad option Wow optionLikeViolation ReportedReport as Inappropriatebbettyspaghetti87@darlindanz,

I was so upset I was shaking. We tried to get pregnant for a year and 3 months. We love our daughter and this is such a breach of trust. I asked my husband...why wouldn’t someone come over and talk to us if they were concerned??? Kind of a different situation, but I’ve had someone call cps on me just because she didn’t like me or something, who the heck knows, but it was while I was pregnant, My kids were 2 and 3 at the time, the case worker came, seen that they clearly weren’t abused or treated badly, but they had to have one more person come out a month later to close the case, it ended up being like 5 months later cause they weren’t keeping up with the case I guess and after the second person came they closed it within 3 days. I’m in the state of Georgia. Like option Love option Hug option Funny option Sad option Wow optionLikeViolation ReportedReport as Inappropriatemmonet_13

I was always so scared of this when my son was a baby. He would just cry at night... it took a year for it to even improve a bit. I don’t think I would’ve been mad tho... people were probably just concerned. If it was someone who has never had kids or whom had an easy baby before they would have no way of truly understanding. As far as knocking on your door, (from their point of view) if there was abuse/neglect happening I don’t think them visiting would’ve done anything but put a target on their back.

ETA: the case will most likely be closed quickly. Ppl get called on all the time for no reasons. They are use to these things. Like option Love option Hug option Funny option Sad option Wow optionLikeViolation ReportedReport as Inappropriatebbettyspaghetti87@monet_13,

I totally understand the concern. I just thought everyone knew newborns cry lol. All our nearby neighbors know we have a newborn. Like option Love option Hug option Funny option Sad option Wow optionLikeViolation ReportedReport as Inappropriatettwo23

You are absolutely not going to have your child taken away from you for this I promise you that. CPS is required to follow up on complaints, they don't always do it but they're supposed to. They should let you know when the case is closed, I'm sure it will be soon. The hospital called CPS on us because my son rolled off my lap onto the floor when I fell asleep while nursing and I brought him into the ER. They said they have to report all cases of trauma to CPS and I was visited by the social worker that night. They closed the case the next morning and called to let me know that. I'm in Delaware. It was traumatizing so I understand what you're feeling. Your neighbors clearly know nothing about colic and I'm sorry it happened. this makes me feel better. I know they have to go out on the silliest calls and I appreciate the work they do. I know they won’t take her logically but then I went and read some horror stories online which only made me feel worse Like option Love option Hug option Funny option Sad option Wow optionLikeViolation ReportedReport as Inappropriateuuserdeletedalias69254958Sorry, this content has been deleted Like option Love option Hug option Funny option Sad option Wow optionLikeViolation ReportedReport as Inappropriatebbettyspaghetti87@userdeletedalias69254958,

I have no idea. The caseworker just said “constant crying.” I didn’t think about them possibly thinking I left her alone. Most evenings we end up taking her out in her stroller since it calms her to be outside and moving. So if they were paying attention they’d know we are her and trying to comfort her. oh my yes that would be very scary. Try not to worry though because I can tell you they won’t take your child for crying in the night. They have way more serious situations and like you said the worker was annoyed she even had to go visit you. Annoying neighbours you have there. I don’t think it would be worth packing up your life and moving since your baby likely won’t be doing this in a few months. Try and let it go like a distant memory. very true. I’ve never felt we had annoying neighbors until now lol. I just hope they don’t keep calling for ridiculous reasons. We plan to move in about a year anyway since we’re only in a 2 bedroom and we plan to have one more child. I am a social worker( not in child protection) and can tell you based on your situation the case will be closed. it's too bad your neighbours couldn't have come to check on you but sometimes people don't feel comfortable with that and if they had a real concern it might've been coming from a good place.. I know I'm a type a person who thinks "should I call/ report this" and second guess myself and I am sure that's what happened here it just sucks that these calls are on the good parents. Any chance one of your neighbors was just irritated by the sound of the crying and wanted to “do something” about it? I remember years ago how angry people would get at our pets making sounds sometimes, even when we were trying to do everything we could to get them to calm down and be quiet. I remember someone threatening to have our dogs removed or have us evicted if it continued. Especially late at night, loud noises for hours can make people crazy. Wow! I’m so sorry that you had to go through this. This is what I would do: I would write a letter and mail it to all the neighbors that are within earshot shot and explain to them them at you’re more than aware of your newborn’s crying and you’re dealing with some gastrointestinal issues with the baby which takes weeks to resolve, and that she is the safest place she can be... and then let them know that you and your family would appreciate a little understanding as you transition through this phase of your life. For the nighttime gas/fussiness , have you tried the windi gaspasser ? By the Frida baby brand? I swear it helps my son so much. It’s a little tube you put in their rectum and it lets a ton of gas out. Massage their belly and try a couple times. It also always stimulates my son to have a huuuuge poop. His belly is noticeably softer after & he’s so happy!! I would really try that if nothing else you’re doing works.

Before we started doing that before bedtime he’d fuss all night and grunt and strain for so long trying to get all that trapped gas/poop out! Now he doesn’t barely do that at all at night! Like option Love option Hug option Funny option Sad option Wow optionLike
