"This is only the threshold of the Forbidden West." ―Lawan

No Man's Land is a region in Horizon Forbidden West. Similar to The Cut and Valleymeet, it acts as a buffer zone between territories, in this case between the Tenakth Clan Lands to the west, the Carja Sundom to the east, and the Utaru's Plainsong to the northwest.

Geography[]

Located west of the Sundom, east of the southern Clan Lands, southeast of Plainsong, and north-northeast of the Burning Shores, No Man's Land is the southeasternmost region of the Forbidden West, stretching from immediately outside Barren Light in the east to a mountain range in the west. The only passages between No Man's Land and the Clan Lands is through an ancient tunnel called the Spinebreak in the south, and through Aloy's Base in the north.

No Man's Land consists primarily of xeric shrublands, with a massive lake with a ruined dam resting in its south. The barren landscape of No Man's Land is heavily contaminated with the Red Blight and dominated by relics of war, both from ancient and recent past. An unavoidable sight is that of the derelict chassis of Chariot machines, including a Metal Devil, frozen in battle against the shells of enemy tanks. Additionally, there are the abandoned ruins of Riverwatch, a Carja outpost from the Red Raids.

Save for the Utaru outpost of Stone's Echo, No Man's Land holds no tribal affiliation.

History[]

In the Old World[]

Remnants of the battle against the Faro Plague.

The area that would become No Man's Land, was the site of a major battle against the Faro Plague, where many remains from the battle can still be found in the present day.

In the New World[]

During the Red Raids, the invading Carja army established the Riverwatch outpost within No Man's Land, but it was abandoned after being overrun by the Tenakth.[1]

Following the end of the Red Raids, Sun-King Avad and the Tenakth clans agreed to establish No Man's Land as a neutral buffer zone between their territories and diminish the chance of future conflict. In that time, Oseram and Carja began to venture into No Man's Land for exploration and salvage.[2]

Trivia[]

  • A "no man's land" is a piece of land that acts as a neutral buffer zone between two opposing sides during wars, which is not controlled by one side or the other.
  • Based on its location compared to Hidden Ember (Las Vegas) and the Zion National Park, No Man's Land may be the New World equivalent of Beaver Dam Wash on the Utah/Nevada border.
